Michálek was previously active in North America between 2000 and 2015, where he played 810 games for the Phoenix and Arizona Coyotes , Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League . His brother Milan was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Zbyněk Michálek began his career in the offspring of HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary , for whom he played in the U20 extra league in the 1999/2000 season. In the summer of 2000 he decided to move to North America and played in the following two years for the Cataractes de Shawinigan in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In Shawinigan he was one of the strongest attacking defenders, so he got a contract offer with the Minnesota Wild farm team in 2002 , although he was never drafted . In the following three seasons he played very successfully in the American Hockey League and won the 2003 Calder Cup with the Houston Eros . In the 2003/04 season he made his debut in the NHL for Minnesota and was used in a total of 22 NHL games.

In August 2006 Zbyněk Michálek was transferred to Phoenix, who in return Erik Westrum and Dustin Wood gave him to the Minnesota Wild. Michálek played in Phoenix until 2010 before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent .

On June 22, 2012 this transferred him to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Marc Cheverie , Harrison Ruopp and a third-round suffrage in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft .

After almost three years with the Coyotes, which had meanwhile been renamed Arizona Coyotes, Michálek moved to the St. Louis Blues in March 2015 , which, depending on his playing time, received an additional third-round vote for an NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Blues transferred Maxim Letunow to Arizona. Michálek only stayed in St. Louis until the end of the season when he returned to the Coyotes as a free agent and signed a new two-year contract.

After the end of the 2016/17 season, Michálek did not receive a further contract in Arizona and therefore returned to his home country in October 2017, where he joined HC Sparta Prague . There he ended the 2017/18 season. After a break, he found a new employer in HC Kometa Brno in January 2019 .

International

Zbyněk Michálek has participated in five world championships in his career to date, the men's ice hockey world championship in 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2011 and 2013 . He won the bronze medal with the team in 2011. He also represented the Czech Republic at the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
