Erik Clinton Westrum (born July 26, 1979 in Apple Valley , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 27 games for the Phoenix Coyotes , Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National between 1997 and 2012 Hockey League and 168 games for HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League A on the position of the center . His father Pat was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Westrum was drafted in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round in 187th place by the Phoenix Coyotes . At that time he played in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , for the University of Minnesota .

For the 2001/02 season he moved to the American Hockey League for the Coyotes' farm team at the time, the Springfield Falcons . There he spent the next two seasons before making the jump to the NHL team. In the 2003/04 season he came so to 15 missions in the National Hockey League , but spent most of the season in the team of the Falcons. Due to the lockout of the NHL season 2004/05 Westrum moved to the AHL to the Utah Grizzlies , who now cooperated with Phoenix. After an unsuccessful season - the Grizzlies missed the playoffs - the striker was transferred with Dustin Wood to the Minnesota Wild , who in return gave Zbyněk Michálek to the Coyotes. There Westrum came again only to ten missions in the NHL and spent the rest of the season in the farm team of the Wild, the Houston Eros . This was followed by another attempt at the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he only played two games and again spent most of the season with the farm team, the Toronto Marlies .

After only one season, Westrum left this club and moved to Switzerland for HC Ambrì-Piotta in 2007 . There he was PostFinance top scorer in the National League A in the 2007/08 season with a total of 72 points. In addition, he was also the top scorer. He also took part in the 2007 Spengler Cup with HC Davos . After the 2011/12 season, Westrum ended his active career as an ice hockey player at the age of 33.

International

In 2004 Westrum was appointed to the squad of the US national team for the World Cup in the Czech Republic , where he won the bronze medal with the team. To the success that the Americans achieved with a 1-0 penalty shootout against Slovakia , the center forward contributed five points in nine tournament matches . It should remain his only missions for the national team.
