The Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM) promotes the exchange of scientific information and cooperation between its members, with the aim of implementing research results in microbiology for the benefit of society and the environment. For this purpose, among other things, a pupil and student competition for the microbe of the year was launched.
organization
Around 3500 microbiologically oriented scientists are united in the association.
Specialist groups
The VAAM is divided into several specialist groups, which are formed according to the members' wishes and hold their own symposia or workshops . The VAAM is divided into the following specialist groups:
- Water and sewage
- Identification and systematics
- Diagnostics and quality assurance
- Environmental microbiology
- Biology of bacterial natural product producers
- Biology and biotechnology of mushrooms
- Archaea
- Microbial cell biology
- Biotransformations
- Yeasts
- Functional genome analysis
- Food microbiology
- Microbial pathogenicity
- Regulation and signal transduction in prokaryotes
- Symbiotic interactions
- Cyanobacteria
Knowledge sharing
The exchange of these results takes place either in conferences , such as the annual conference held in spring, or in conferences organized by the specialist groups on special microbiological topics. In addition, the specialist and membership journal BIOspektrum appears, which is published seven times a year in cooperation with the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , the Society for Genetics and the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Membership in umbrella organizations
The association is a member of the German National Committee , which represents the interests of bioscientists in international organizations. She is also a member of the Association for Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany , which is committed to the biosciences in Germany.
Research award
The research award is given for outstanding current research work in the field of microbiology. Most of the work is said to have been carried out in Germany ; the award winner does not have to be of German origin. The assessment period is usually the last few years before the award is made. The prize is endowed with € 10,000. The research prize is awarded annually at the VAAM's annual conference. The research award was presented for the first time on March 10, 2008.
