Albert Leroy "Bert" Marshall (born November 22, 1943 in Kamloops , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and current scout who played 940 games for the Detroit Red Wings between 1964 and 1979 , California / Oakland (Golden) Seals , New York Rangers and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . After retiring, he was a long-time scout for the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes, and before that he briefly trained the Colorado Rockies .
Career
Player career
Marshall spent his junior years between 1962 and 1964 with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Central Alberta Hockey League . In addition, the defender took part with the team in 1963 and 1964 in the Memorial Cup , which the Oil Kings won in 1963. The following year the team lost in the final. In his second year in particular, Marshall stood out as an attacking defensive player from the team and was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the CAHL.
From the juniors Marshall moved to the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League . These put the Canadian first in the Central Professional Hockey League in their farm teams , the Cincinnati Wings and Memphis Wings . It was not until the 1965/66 season that the 21-year-old made it into the Detroit NHL squad and reached the final of the 1966 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Red Wings in his rookie season . Marshall finally stayed in Detroit until January 1968, before he was given to the Oakland Seals together with John Brenneman and Ted Hampson in exchange for Kent Douglas . In the service of the Seals, which traded under the name California Golden Seals at the beginning of the 1970/71 season , Marshall was a little more than five years. From the beginning of the 1971/72 season until his move in March 1973, Marshall acted as team captain and shared this position with Carol Vadnais . From 1972, Joey Johnston became a third official.
In March 1973, the defensive player left the Californians and moved to the US East Coast to the New York Rangers . They bought the Golden Seals from Marshall and two months after the deal was closed they also sent Dave Hrechkosy and Gary Coalter to the West Coast for further compensation. With the Rangers, Marshall only spent 14 games before he was selected in June of the same year Intra-League Draft by the New York Islanders . As with the California Golden Seals, Marshall quickly found a new sporting home with the Islanders. He stayed six years of playing the franchise from Long Iceland and prepared with his experience the way for the success of the team in the early 1980s, but which he was unable to participate after his active career after the 1978/79 season at the age declared terminated by 35 years.

After his active career, Marshall pursued a job in the coaching business, after he had already acted as a playing assistant coach for the New York Islanders in his last professional season. He was committed to the 1979/80 season by the Indianapolis Checkers from the Central Hockey League , which cooperated as a farm team with the Islanders. There he was head coach for the following two seasons and also completed six appearances as a player for the team in his first year. In two years of his activity, he qualified with the team for the playoffs and made the Colorado Rockies from the National Hockey League attention.
For the 1981/82 season Marshall was presented as the sixth head coach in franchise history, replacing Bill MacMillan . He was sideways Marshall Johnston asked as assistant coach. Marshall's start with the Rockies was disastrous, however. He won only three of the first 24 games of the season and got a total of ten out of a possible 48 points. He and Johnston then changed positions, with only 39 more points being added under Johnston's leadership in the remaining 56 games. Marshall left the franchise, which played as the New Jersey Devils the following season , after the end of the season.
After the disappointing station with the Rockies, Marshall no longer worked as a trainer. Instead, he returned after a year-long break to his ex-club New York Islanders and worked there as an amateur scout from the beginning of the 1983/84 season . From 1994 to 1996 he was director of amateur scouting for the Islanders, before moving to league competitor Hartford Whalers within the NHL in the 1996/97 season. There he also brought his experience in amateur scouting and moved with the team in 1997/98 , which from then on took part in the NHL's game operations as the Carolina Hurricanes .
