Robert Harold "Bob" Stewart (born November 10, 1950 in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island ; † February 3, 2017 in Creve Coeur , Missouri , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who, during his active career between 1967 and 1980, among others 580 Has played games for the Boston Bruins , California Golden Seals , Cleveland Barons , St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Since the end of his career, Stewart has held a dubious NHL record with an absolute plus / minus balance of −257 .
Career
Stewart spent his junior years between 1967 and 1970 with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association . There, the defender developed over the years into a versatile defender who played with hardness on the defensive, but also set accents on the offensive. After he had scored well over 30 points scorer in his second and third year in the OHA , he was selected in the first round in the first round of the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League in 1970 in the NHL Amateur Draft .
After the selection in the draft, Stewart immediately switched to the professional field, where he first came to Boston's farm team , the Oklahoma City Blazers in the Central Hockey League . There the Canadian also spent parts of the 1971/72 season, in which he was also used for the Boston Braves in the American Hockey League and made his debut in eight games for the Bruins in the NHL. In February 1972, however, Boston separated from his junior player and transferred him to the California Golden Seals in a five-player swap deal . With him, Reggie Leach and Rick Smith moved to California, while Carol Vadnais and Don O'Donoghue made their way to Boston.
With the Golden Seals, the Canadian established himself in the NHL and was an integral part of the roster until the franchise moved to Cleveland , Ohio . In his final season with the Oakland team, he served as team captain with Jim Neilson . This office was shared by the two players during their two seasons with the Cleveland Barons , as the franchise was called until its final dissolution after the 1977/78 season . As a result of the franchise dissolution, the now 28-year-old defensive player in the 1978 NHL Dispersal Draft was protected from election by other franchises by the Minnesota North Stars , who took the place of the barons in the league, and thus became the property of Minnesota. On the same day, however, they transferred the Canadian in exchange for a second-round vote in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft to the St. Louis Blues , who also received Harvey Bennett junior in review of the transfer .
Stewart played the 1978/79 season with the St. Louis Blues and began the following season there before he was again part of a player swap in November 1979. While moving to the Pittsburgh Penguins , St. Louis received Blair Chapman . In the service of the Penguins, Stewart ended his active career at the end of the 1979/80 game year at the age of 29. Since then he has held an NHL record with an absolute plus / minus balance of −257 over his entire career . Stewart died in February 2017 at the age of 66 in Creve Coeur , Missouri, USA .
