Dennis Andrew Ververgaert (* the thirtieth May 1953 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career 1970-1981 among other 591 games for the Vancouver Canucks , Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League on has contested the position of the right winger .

Career

Ververgaert spent his junior years at the beginning of the 1970/71 game year with the St. Catharines Black Hawks from the Ontario Hockey Association , who transferred his transfer rights after only five missions to league rivals London Knights . In the Knights, the right winger played a total of three seasons until the summer of 1973. During this period, he managed to be elected to the All-Star team twice. His steady improvement in the point yield brought him with 147 scorer points at the end of the season 1972/73 the award with the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy , which received the best right winger in the league. Then Ververgaert was selected in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft in third overall position by the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League . In the competing World Hockey Association , however, the teams made little hope of a commitment of the winger and so he was only drawn in the sixth round of the WHA Amateur Draft in 1973 in 67th position of the New York Golden Blades .

Immediately after the draft, the young Canadian switched to the organization of the Vancouver Canucks and made the breakthrough there straight away. In his rookie year he had a successful season, which he finished with 57 points scorer. It was followed by five and a half more seasons in the service of the Western Canadians, in which he completed his best year in the league in the 1975/76 season with 71 points, including 37 goals. As a member of the Vancouver Canucks, he was in the years 1976 and 1978 for the NHL All-Star Game invited. Ververgaert's time in Vancouver finally came to an end in the course of the 1978/79 game year , when he was given in late December 1978 in exchange for Drew Callander and Kevin McCarthy to the Philadelphia Flyers . Between him and the new coach Harry Neale there had been differences over the defensive work of the striker over the course of the season, which ultimately led to the break. In addition, he had not found his form after the departure of his storm colleague André Boudrias in the summer of 1976 and had received strong competitors from the new league Stan Smyl within the squad .

In Philadelphia, Ververgaert developed into a defensive striker during his one and a half seasons. In the Flyers, however, he did not fill the dominant role that had been intended for him in Vancouver. He stayed with the team until the end of the 1979/80 season , before his contract was dissolved by the club. In October 1980 the attacker hired as a free agent with the Washington Capitals . After only one season at the capital club, they considered putting their previous commitment to the minor leagues before the 1981/82 season . However, Ververgaert had previously been relegated and subsequently ended his active career prematurely in the summer of 1981 at the age of only 28.
