Donald William "Don" Awrey (born July 18, 1943 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Boston Bruins , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 . With the Canadian national team he took part in the 1972 Summit Series .

Career

Don Awrey played in his youth for the Waterloo Siskins , among others , whereby his sporting development in the youth field was affected by severe back pain. As a result, he did not run until the season 1961/62, at the age of 18, regularly with the Niagara Falls Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), the highest junior league in his home province. After two years in Niagara Falls, the Canadian moved as a free agent to the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he needed two seasons to finally earn a regular place in the highest league in North America. Previously, the defender was regularly used on the farm teams of the Bruins, the Minneapolis Bruins from the Central Professional Hockey League and the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League (AHL).

In Boston, Awrey established himself as a defensively oriented NHL defender who primarily impressed with physical ice hockey. After poor sporting years in the early and mid-1960s, the Bruins rose a little later to one of the best teams in the league and won their first Stanley Cup since 1941 with him in 1970 , which they immediately followed in 1972 with another. He also represented his home country at the 1972 Summit Series , but only played there in two games. Awrey spent a total of ten years in the organization before he was given in October 1973 in exchange for Jake Rathwell and a second-round vote in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft to the St. Louis Blues . He promptly represented the Blues at the 1974 NHL All-Star Game , but was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal in November 1974 , who in return sent Chuck Lefley to St. Louis.

In his second year in Montréal, the Canadiens won another Stanley Cup, but Awrey was not used in the playoffs and therefore was not immortalized a third time on the trophy. By today's standards - he had played more than half of the regular season games - he would have been automatically qualified. For a third-round suffrage in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft , the defender was given up in August 1976 to the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he only played for one year, as did the New York Rangers , which he joined as a free agent in October 1977 would have. For a financial return he moved to the Colorado Rockies for the last time in November 1978 and let his career end there. In total, he completed 1050 games in his NHL career and scored 207 points scorer .
