Scott Stephen Garland (born May 16, 1952 in Regina , Saskatchewan , † June 9, 1979 in Montreal , Québec ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who, in the course of his active career between 1970 and 1979, among other things, 98 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . Mainly, however, played Garland, who died of a traffic accident at the age of 27, in the Central Hockey League .

Career

Garland began his junior career in the 1970/71 season with the Canadien junior de Montréal in the Ontario Hockey Association . The following season the winger moved to the lower-class Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League , where he ran up for the Sarnia Bees . He also played some games for the Peterborough Petes in the OHA.

For the season 1972/73 Garland switched to the professional camp when he signed a contract with the Tulsa Oilers from the Central Hockey League . There he was able to convince with his performances and received the following season a contract offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , which the free agent also accepted. The attacker was initially used by the Maple Leafs in the CHL, where he went on hold for the Oklahoma City Blazers over the next three years . During the 1975/76 season , Garland finally made his debut for Toronto and completed 23 encounters. For the season 1976/77 he managed to get a regular place in the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs, so he stayed there the entire year and was used in 69 of the 80 season games. He got 29 scorer points . However, this should remain his only full year in the NHL; he refused to continue playing for Toronto and was therefore sent back to the CHL in the 1977/78 season by the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Tulsa Oilers.

In the summer of 1978 they transferred the striker together with Brian Glennie , Kurt Walker and a second-round suffrage in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings , while these received Dave Hutchison and Lorne Stamler in return . Garland was also unable to recommend himself to his new club for a call to the NHL squad, so he spent most of the season on Los Angeles' farm team , the Springfield Indians from the American Hockey League . He played only six other NHL games for the Kings in the 1978/79 season .

On June 9, 1979 - during the summer recess of the NHL - Garland was involved in a traffic accident in the Franco-Canadian metropolis of Montreal . While driving, a tire blew on his vehicle, causing it to hit a wall. He died a little later at the age of 27 from his injuries sustained by the force of the impact. Garland was buried in his native Regina, Saskatchewan Province .
