Lists of aviation accidents

On March 7, 1968, a Tu-124 crashed while taking off on Aeroflot flight 3153 , an intra-Soviet scheduled flight from Volgograd via Rostov-on-Don to Odessa , killing one of its occupants.

Plane and crew

The six-year-old Tupolev Tu-124 with the aircraft registration CCCP-45019 was first used on March 2, 1962 and then operated by various regional departments within Aeroflot. It was equipped with 44 seats.

The crew consisted of a flight captain , a first officer , a flight engineer , a navigator and a flight attendant .

Flight history

At 10:20 a.m. the aircraft accelerated to takeoff, with the flaps set to a position of 10 °. Take-off proceeded normally until the aircraft reached a height of 3 to 5 m and traveled 100 to 120 m. Then the plane leaned to the left. The pilots tried to counteract this by turning the control horns to the right. At a height of 10 to 15 m, the aircraft began to sink after flying 400 m. It touched down again 7 to 8 seconds after take-off, offset 23 m to the left of the runway and 1,500 m from the start of the runway. The Tu-124 lost part of the left wing and then broke into three main parts that were not separated from each other. The aircraft came to a halt 83 m to the left of the runway and 1,640 m from the start of the runway. No fire broke out because the flight captain had turned off the engines during the flight.

The navigator was killed because the front fuselage section was destroyed. The first officer, the flight engineer, the flight attendant and one passenger suffered serious injuries, the rest of the occupants either suffered no or only minor injuries.

Cause of accident

It was found that during the take-off run , at a speed of 260 km / h, the spoilers were accidentally extended. At this point in time, the aircraft was about to take off and had covered a take-off distance of 1000 m. The deployment of the spoilers was caused by the unfortunate positioning of the corresponding switch on the right side of the control horn. Since the spoilers took about three seconds to deploy after activation, the aircraft was able to take off, but then lost its lift and crashed.
