The Rostov-on-Don Airport ( Russian Аэропорт Ростов-на-Дону ) was an international airport ( IATA code : RVI , ICAO code : URRR ), 9 km east of the city of Rostov-on-Don , in southern Russia . In 2012, the airport had a passenger volume of 1,874,000 (previous year: 1,716,200) and 6204 t (previous year: 5330 t) of freight were transported. The airport was officially closed on March 1, 2018 and the flights were transferred to the new Platov International Airport .

history

The airport was opened on June 25, 1925. 80 passengers were carried in the first three months. From 1926 a regular airline Moscow- Rostov- Tbilisi was established. The first airport building was built in 1932 and was replaced by the current one in 1977. Rostov has been an international airport since 1986.

On November 27, 2017, the airport's IATA code was changed from ROV to RVI as the new Platov International Airport adopted the old code. The new airport is scheduled to open at the end of 2017, just in time for the 2018 World Cup .

Incidents

A Boeing 737-800 operated by the low-cost airline Flydubai ( aircraft registration number A6-FDN ) crashed after the second attempt to land on March 19, 2016 from a height of around 1,200 meters and hit the airport premises at a steep angle. None of the 62 people on board survived the crash. Both an Aeroflot aircraft and one of the Czech Airlines avoided Krasnodar Airport , while a Turkish Airlines aircraft flew back to Istanbul. The airport was temporarily closed after the accident. The later approaching planes were also diverted to Krasnodar.
