The airport Sharm el-Sheikh ( English Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport , Arabic مطار شرم الشيخ الدولي Maṭār Sharm el-Sheikh ad-Daulī , formerly Ophira International Airport ) is the airport of the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh and is located in close proximity to the city center. It isthe second largest airport in Egyptafter Cairo .
Airlines and Destinations
The airport offers domestic scheduled flights to Cairo , Luxor and Alexandria as well as an international flight to London-Luton five times a week . Numerous charter companies from all over Europe serve the airport.
history
The airport was built in 1968 as a base for the Israeli Air Force . With the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of 1979, the Sinai peninsula, including the airport, was returned to Egypt.
In May 2007 a second terminal was opened at the airport with a new capacity of 8 million passengers per year. 40 check-in counters and 6 passenger boarding bridges were designed to handle an even larger number of scheduled and charter flights. The terminal covers a total of 43,000 m² on two floors and consists of three wings.
expansion
In October 2015, a $ 671 million expansion was announced. The airport's capacity is to be expanded from 10 to 18 million passengers per year. A third terminal, a new runway and a new tower will be built for this purpose. The China-Africa Development Fund pledged $ 50 million as a loan for the project.
