Flight history

Debris of the Boeing 737

All times in UTC , local time in Rostov-on-Don +3 hours.
The aircraft took off from Dubai Airport at 18:37 and reached the planned altitude at 19:14. At 22:16 of the descent was initiated at 22:39 began the final approach to the runway 22 of the Rostov-on-Don airport . This was canceled at 10:41 p.m. after flying through a wind shear at a height of 340 meters (1100 feet ) and a go - around maneuver was initiated. The pilots then ascended to around 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) and were then instructed to orbit at 2,400 meters (8,000 feet) until weather conditions improved. After 30 minutes in the holding , the crew requested clearance to climb in order to continue holding patterns at an altitude of 4,500 meters (15,000 feet). The clearance was given by the air traffic controller .

At 12:28 a.m., the pilots began a second landing approach, but broke it off four and a half kilometers before the landing threshold at a height of 220 meters (720 feet) at 12:40 a.m. due to the weather and took off again. To do this, the landing gear was retracted and the position of the flaps was set to 15 degrees. A minute later, the Boeing 737 hit the airport runway after a dive from almost 1,000 meters.

Due to the weather, an Aeroflot aircraft had already moved to Krasnodar Airport, 250 km away . Because Rostov Airport was temporarily closed after the accident, a Czech Airlines plane also moved to this airport. A Turkish Airlines plane returned to its departure airport in Istanbul .

Weather conditions

The weather conditions at the time of the accident were 3.8 to 6 kilometers visibility, cloud bases of 430 to 550 meters and rain showers , the wind came from south-westerly directions at 50 km / h (27 knots ), in gusts of up to 78 km / h (42 knots) .

Cause of accident

Russian accident investigators announced on April 8, 2016 that the pilots, while going around at an altitude of 900 meters, pushed the control column forward and at the same time operated the electrical trim of the horizontal stabilizer for 12 seconds , which caused the horizontal stabilizer to be trimmed from −2.5 changed to +2.5 degrees. The Boeing 737 then went into a nosedive at an altitude of almost 1000 meters. The aircraft struck with a pitch angle ( Pitch ) of at least 50 degrees and a speed of about 600 km / h (320 knots) next to the runway. It is unknown whether the crew manually changed the trim of the horizontal stabilizer or whether there was another cause.

Reactions

  • The governor of the Rostov region , Vasily Golubev, made March 20 a day of mourning.
  • The airline set up an Emergency Response Team .
  • One day after the accident, Flydubai initiated a program in which the families of the victims are to receive $ 20,000.
  • flydubai flights from Dubai to Rostov-on-Don received the new flight number FZ935 three days after the accident.
