The Simferopol International Airport Amet-Khan Sultan ( Ukrainian Міжнародний аеропорт "Сімферополь" імені Султана Амет-хана , Crimean Aqmescit Ava Limanı , Russian Международный аэропорт "Симферополь" имени Амет-хана Султана ) is the largest airport on the peninsula of Crimea . It is located about eleven kilometers northwest of the city of Simferopol and was opened in 1936. After the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the Russian government decided to give up the old ailing airport. The new International Airport IK Ajwasowski (Russian: Международный аэропорт Симферополь имени И. К. Айвазовского) looks like a wave of the sea and was opened in 2018. Due to the sanctions, it can only be reached via Russian airlines from 30 cities in Russia and is served with up to 250 flights at peak times.

Connection

The airport is connected to the city of Simferopol via the trolleybus line 9 of the state transport company Krymskyj trolejbus . In earlier years there were also continuous trolleybus courses from the airport via the overland route to Alushta (line 54) and Yalta (line 55). The latter was the longest trolleybus line in the world.

Bus and trolleybus traffic has been running all day from the airport to the Simferopol train station since 2015. The journey time is ten minutes.

Airport facility

The old Terminal B (arrival transit zone) in July 2015

Two new terminals were opened on May 9, 2015.

In order to cater to the increasing number of passengers, a completely new terminal with a capacity of 7-10 million passengers a year was built from 2016. The opening of this new terminal took place on April 16, 2018. All air traffic will be handled at the new terminal. Terminal A and Terminal B ceased operations completely.

history

Simferopol Airport was previously one of two replacement landing sites (next to Khorol ) of the Russian space shuttle program Buran and was therefore equipped with a landing system used only by the space shuttle. The airline Air Onix was based at the airport until its bankruptcy in December 2013.
