The Kazan International Airport is a commercial airport in Russia in Stolbischtsche , Rajon Laishevo , Tatarstan , 28 km south of the center of the metropolis Kazan . It opened in 1979 and is now the largest airport in Tatarstan and one of the most important airports in the Volga region .

history

The decision to build a second airport in Kazan was made in 1972. The old airport, 8 km northwest of the city, "Kazan-1", was no longer sufficient; by 1972 it was handling over 1.6 million passengers. A new runway was also required to accommodate Tu-134 aircraft . In 1979 the construction work was completed and the 2500 m long runway was approached with the aircraft types Tu-124 and Tu-134. The first scheduled flight took place on September 15, 1979, a passenger plane from Sochi. In 1982 the airport was expanded to accommodate the Il-86 . The airport was renamed "Kazan" in 1984, until then it was called "Kazan-2". The first international flight started in 1987 to Berlin, a few months earlier the airport was given the status of "International". Connections to Poland , Albania , China , Bulgaria and Mongolia were quickly established . Since October 1992 it has been possible to fly to Istanbul . Since March 1997 Lufthansa has been flying on the Kazan– Frankfurt route , which was discontinued in April 2013. Aeroflot has operated the connection twice a week since June 2016.

As of June 1, 1992, the airport has been operated by the International Airport Kazan AG (ОАО Международный аэропорт Казань) ”. At the end of 1994 it was decided to expand the airport. The most important points were the expansion of the airport train station and the fuel system as well as the construction of a runway of 3750 m length. In addition, the flight control center was to be modernized and a freight complex, a four-star hotel and a hangar were to be built. The fuel system was modernized in 2001 and the runway completed in July 2004. Siemens was awarded the contract to modernize the communication systems . In 2004 it was decided to build a business terminal for 132 million rubles with a capacity of 100 passengers per hour. All construction work was completed by 2005, the 1000th anniversary of the city. In total, the modernization decided in 1994 (in addition to the business terminal) cost 765 million  rubles . Kazan's second airport, northeast of the city, was closed in 2004 and later converted into a racecourse.

Up to 2008 the number of passengers grew strongly. The airport served 751,504 passengers in 2008, an increase of 21.9% over the previous year. The number of passengers rose particularly sharply on international flights, 315,255 (+29.5%). On domestic flights there were 436,249 passengers, 17% more than in 2007. In 2008 a total of 8,238 aircraft took off. In 2012, 1.48 million passengers were handled at the airport, an increase of over 21% compared to 2011. Another year later, the number of passengers rose by 24.2% to 1.847 million passengers. The growth rate of 30.3% was particularly strong for passengers on international flights, who make up around half of all passengers. In 2014, just under one million passengers flew nationally (+ 9.9%), while the number of international flights rose only slightly to 943,403 (+ 0.5%).
