The Forum ( officially The Forum, presented by Chase by sponsorship agreement ) is a multi-purpose hall in the US city of Inglewood in the state of California . The Los Angeles County arena was sponsored by the Great Western Forum from 1988 to 2003 , after the Great Western Savings & Loan bank .

history

The hall was built between mid-1966 and late 1967 on behalf of Jack Kent Cooke , then owner of the Los Angeles Lakers from the National Basketball Association (NBA) and founder of the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League (NHL).

On September 10, 1973, Muhammad Ali's revenge fight took place in the forum of the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) championship against Ken Norton , Ali won in this fight over 12 rounds on points.

The Forum was the home ground of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings from 1967 to 1999. 1979 Cooke sold the forum together with both franchises to Jerry Buss. In the 1980s, the Lakers won the NBA forum five times. The basketball games were played here at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles .

In 1988, the owner Buss signed a sponsorship agreement with the Great Western Savings & Loan bank for the arena name. In addition to ice hockey and basketball, various indoor soccer teams played in the forum. In 1999 the modern Staples Center was opened in Los Angeles . Both the Lakers and Kings moved their homes there. Since 2016, the new Inglewood Stadium has been built to the south of the forum , which is to become the new home ground of the NFL franchises of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers from the 2020 season , who have relocated to Los Angeles because of this stadium .

In 2012 the forum was acquired for US $ 23.5 million by the operating company of Madison Square Garden (MSG), which consists of the two divisions MSG Entertainment and MSG Sports. The MSG Sports division also owns the NBA franchise for the New York Knicks and the NHL franchise for the New York Rangers . From 2012 to 2014, the outdated hall was extensively renovated for 76.5 million US dollars. The arena was u. a. first with VIP - boxes equipped. With the modernization, the event hall also received a new sponsor name with The Forum, presented by Chase . To reopen in early 2014, the Eagles gave seven concerts from January 15 to 27 during their History of the Eagles tour .

On September 24, 2014, The Forum in Inglewood was listed as a Historic Monument on the National Register of Historic Places .

In 2019, there was a controversy in which MSG Entertainment sued the city of Inglewood and the Los Angeles Clippers , as a new multi-purpose stadium is to be built in the immediate vicinity of the new Inglewood Stadium as the home of the Clippers , which the management of the NBA is also advocating.

In March 2020, Steve Ballmer , former CEO of Microsoft and owner of the Clippers , bought The Forum . After long negotiations, Ballmer and MSG agreed on the sale. The purchase price was 400 million US dollars (around 365 million euros ). The Forum will continue to host concerts and entertainment events. This resolves all legal disputes and the Los Angeles Clippers can continue planning the new building. Before construction can begin, Inglewood City Council has yet to finalize its environmental impact assessment, which began in December 2019 . A decision is expected in summer 2020. If the project is approved, work could start as planned in 2021.

The arena is intended as the venue for the gymnastics , rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline gymnastics competitions of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles .

Concerts

In its history, the forum was a much-used concert arena and even after the inauguration of the Staples Center, the forum will continue to be used for concerts. Since the opening, Bee Gees , David Bowie , David Gilmour , Iron Maiden , Madonna , Prince , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Def Leppard , Babymetal and The Rolling Stones have performed here .
