Babymetal (spelling: BABYMETAL) is a Japanese kawaii metal band. It consists of the singers and dancers Suzuka Nakamoto ("Su-Metal") and Moa Kikuchi ("Moametal"), who are supported by an accompanying band called the Kami Band . The concept of Babymetal is a fusion of the seemingly contradicting genres Metal and J-Pop . This style is known as Kawaii Metal (from kawaii , "cute" or "delightful") and includes elements of speed metal , death metal , black metal , industrial metal and EDM . Complex choreography is presented in music videos and live performances . Babymetal was founded in 2010 by the talent agency Amuse , was initially a subgroup of the idol pop group Sakura Gakuin and has been independent since 2013. Although the lyrics are sung almost exclusively in Japanese, the band has also established itself internationally. In addition to Nakamoto and Kikuchi, Yui Mizuno ("Yuimetal") also belonged to the band until she officially left the band in October 2018 due to illness.

history

As part of Sakura Gakuin (2010–2012)

Kei Kobayashi (also known as "Kobametal"), an employee of the talent agency Amuse , developed the concept of Babymetal in 2010. He was a fan of since his youth Metal -music various styles and was the talent of Suzuka Nakamoto from Hiroshima attention who belonged to the idol pop group Karen Girl’s produced by Amuse until March 2009 and switched to the newly founded formation Sakura Gakuin in April 2010 . Kobayashi had the idea of fusing metal with J-Pop , for which he thought Nakamoto's powerful vocal voice was particularly suitable. He started putting his idea into practice as part of Sakura Gakuin. This idol pop group focuses on everyday school life and is made up of several subgroups that are based on various leisure activities organized by schools. One of these subgroups was the Jūon-bu ( 重音 部 ), the "club for hard music". In addition to Nakamoto, this club, which was to appear under the name Babymetal , also included Yui Mizuno from Kanagawa and Moa Kikuchi from Nagoya , who were considered particularly talented dancers. Neither of the three girls was familiar with metal at the time. They were given the stage names "Su-metal", "Yuimetal" and "Moametal".

Babymetal's first performance took place in Yokohama on November 28, 2010 , as part of the Sakura Gakuin Festival 2010 , Sakura Gakuin's debut concert. They performed the song Doki Doki Morning . It was included on the April 2011 album Sakura Gakuin 2010 Nendo: Message . Jūonbu Records , a specially created indie sub-label of Toy's Factory , also released Doki Doki Morning on October 22, 2011 as a limited DVD single , which was available during performances by Sakura Gakuin. A related music video uploaded to YouTube drew the attention of foreign media for the first time. In July 2011 Babymetal began to present the song Ijime, Dame, Zettai at concerts by Sakura Gakuin .

On March 7, 2012, Jūonbu Records released the split single Babymetal × Kiba of Akiba , a cooperation with the alternative metal band Kiba of Akiba . It reached number 3 on the weekly Oricon indie charts and number 1 on Tower Records' weekly indie rankings . After Babymetal had presented the song Headbanger for the first time on June 23, 2012 at a promotional event of Tower Records , it was released as a single on July 4. Babymetal had its first independent appearance (not as part of Sakura Gakuin) three weeks later on July 21 at the Rockmaykan concert venue in Meguro . In August 2012, the three girls performed at the Summer Sonic . With an average age of 13 at the time, they were the youngest ever to take to the stage at this rock festival , one of the most important in Japan. In November 2012 they traveled to Singapore for the Anime Festival Asia , where they made their first appearance outside of Japan.

Independence and first album (2013-2015)

On January 9, 2013, the group made their major label debut with the single Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Toy's Factory founded the new sub-label BMD Fox Records for this purpose ). In the first week the single rose to number 6 on the Oricon charts. In the spring of 2013, Nakamoto graduated from middle school and had to say goodbye to Sakura Gakuin. Sakura Gakuin's concept actually stipulates that the members must leave the group at this point in order to make room for younger successors. With that, Nakamoto should have left the Babymetal subgroup and been replaced. However, the management at Amuse decided to continue Babymetal as an independent project separate from Sakura Gakuin because of its unexpectedly great success. Babymetal's final concert as part of Sakura Gakuin took place on March 31, 2013 at the Tokyo International Forum.

The second major single titled Megitsune was released on June 19, 2013 and reached position 7 on the Oricon charts. From May to October, Babymetal completed a tour of Japan, which included appearances at various festivals (Metropolitan Rock Festival, Join Alive, Summer Sonic, Rock in Japan and Inuzama Rock Festival), which further increased the group's profile. In mid-October, the Babymetal members were the youngest artists to ever perform at the Loud Park metal festival in the Saitama Super Arena . In November 2013, the first live video called Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse was released , which reached seventh place in the Oricon Blu-Ray charts and second place among the music Blu-rays. In the same month, Babymetal also released a promotional video to promote the Japanese premiere of Metallica Through the Never . On February 2, 2014, a joint concert with the Taiwanese metal band Chthonic took place in Taipei .

Appearance in London in November 2014; Kikuchi on the left, Nakamoto in the middle and Mizuno on the right

BMD Fox Records released the group's first album on February 26, 2014 . It was called Babymetal and comprised thirteen songs, including all singles that have been released so far. A limited edition was also available with an additional DVD that contained music videos, audio commentary and live performances. The album received consistently positive reviews and reached number 4 on the Oricon album chart, while it even rose to number 2 on the Billboard Japan album charts . In Germany , Great Britain and the USA it reached the top position in the iTunes metal charts . An important reason for the international success was the music video for the song Gimme Chocolate , which was uploaded to YouTube on February 3rd ! which quickly became a viral hit and has been viewed millions of times. When the Fine Brothers uploaded a video two months later that showed the astonished or shocked reactions of various well-known YouTubers to Babymetal, this effect intensified, especially outside of Japan.

On March 1 and 2, 2014, Babymetal performed in Budōkan . With an average age of 14½ years, the three girls were again the youngest who had ever performed there. The subsequent world tour in summer 2014 took the band to Europe and North America for the first time. She has appeared at the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth , Heavy MONTRÉAL and Summer Sonic, among others . In August, she was the opening act of Lady Gaga during her tour artrave: The artpop ball in the western United States. Babymetal's other positions included the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and the Brixton Academy in London . On October 29th, the second live video, Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse , was released, with recordings of concerts at NHK Hall and Makuhari Messe . At the concert at the Brixton Academy , the band presented the new song Road of Resistance . At the beginning of January 2015 it was announced that it was a cooperation with Sam Totman and Herman Li from the power metal band DragonForce . The song appeared shortly afterwards as a bonus track on the Red Night version of the live album Live at Budokan and on the exclusive fan club edition The One .

Two years after Nakamoto, Mizuno and Kikuchi also left the Sakura Gakuin group in March 2015. Babymetal's second world tour was through Mexico , North America and Europe. These included appearances at Rock on the Range , the Reading and Leeds Festivals , Rockavaria , Rock im Revier , Rock in Vienna , Summer Sonic and at the Ozzfest . The debut album Babymetal was re-released in May / June 2015 to meet the high demand abroad. In mid-June 2015 a day before the Golden Gods Awards of Metal Hammer , Babymetal met with DragonForce a surprise appearance at the Download Festival in Donington Park , where they together Gimme Chocolate !! played. The performance was controversial, as promoter Andy Copping had previously expressly emphasized several times that he would never book Babymetal for his festival. Another cooperation took place in September at the EDM festival Ultra Japan in Tokyo, when the band together with Skrillex also released the hit Gimme Chocolate !! presented.

Metal Resistance (2016-2017)

The second world tour ended with two concerts in the Yokohama Arena in mid-December 2015 . Immediately after the end of the second concert, the imminent release of Babymetal's second album was announced, as was the start of a new world tour. The song Karate was released on YouTube on February 25, 2016, and also as a single the following day. This reached number 17 on the Japanese Billboard charts. Karate also served as the official signature song of the WWE wrestling show NXT TakeOver: The End . The album Metal Resistance was released worldwide on April 1st (three days earlier in Japan) and received mostly positive reviews. While it took second place on the Oricon album charts in Japan, it also proved to be an international success. For example, it reached number 15 on the UK album charts in Great Britain , which is the highest ranking of any Japanese band. In the US, Metal Resistance reached number 39 on the Billboard 200 and number 7 on the digital album charts; the placement on the Billboard 200 was the highest of a Japanese publication since Sukiyaki and Other Japanese Hits by Kyū Sakamoto in 1963. Even in Germany, where all Babymetal music videos were blocked on YouTube until 2017 due to a lack of a copyright agreement with GEMA , rose the album at number 36.

Appearance at Wembley Arena (April 2016)

One day after the album was released, the third world tour began on April 2nd. The opening concert took place in London at Wembley Arena , making Babymetal the first Japanese band to headline there . Metal Hammer reported that the sales record for fan merchandise at this prestigious concert hall had been broken, but without giving exact numbers. To further increase publicity in the US, the band appeared on April 5th in New York on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , where they performed live Gimme Chocolate !! played. The tour through eight countries on three continents also included several appearances at well-known festivals. These include a. Rock in Vienna, Download, FortaRock , Fuji Rock Festival , Rock in Japan, Rising Sun Rock Festival and Summer Sonic. During the tour, the band made a stop in Columbus, Ohio and attended the Alternative Press Music Awards in 2016 . After initially performing karate there, Rob Halford (singer of Judas Priest ) took the stage and presented the songs Painkiller and Breaking the Law together with Babymetal , with Mizuno and Kikuchi playing guitar in public for the first time on the last song.

The tour ended with two concerts in the Tokyo Dome on September 19 and 20, 2016 (“Red Night” and “Black Night”). They were both sold out and together drew around 110,000 spectators. Both the opening concert and the two closing concerts were released as live albums: Live at Wembley on November 23, 2016 and Live at Tokyo Dome on April 1, 2017. In December 2016, Babymetal accompanied the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their The Getaway World Tour as opening act for some concerts in the UK. At the concert in London's O2 Arena , drummer Chad Smith played cover versions of the Judas Priest songs Painkiller and Breaking the Law with the band . In January 2017, Babymetal supported Metallica at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul , followed by Guns n 'Roses in four locations in Japan. In April Babymetal toured again with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, this time through the southeastern United States. In June, several appearances followed in the western United States as the opening act for KoЯn . After several smaller concerts in Japan, which were exclusively reserved for fan club members, Babymetal appeared for the first time as headliner at Summer Sonic in August 2017. On December 2nd and 3rd, 2017, performances in the Hiroshima Green Arena followed , the first concerts in Nakamoto's hometown. They served as a kind of early seijin-shiki (coming of age) as she turned 20 three weeks later. Mizuno was absent from these two very elaborately staged shows due to illness.

Resignation of Yui Mizuno (2018)

Shortly before the start of another world tour, the single Distortion was released on May 8, 2018 . At the concerts in the USA Yui Mizuno was absent without giving any reasons by the management, which led to numerous speculations among fans. Following a request from Alternative Press magazine , a spokesman for 5B Management, the artist agency responsible for North America, said: "Yuimetal will remain a member of the band, but will not be on the current US tour". The answer vaguely hinted at a "new narrative for the band's future" that was still in development. Mizuno was also absent from the European tour in June, which included appearances at the Download Festival as well as at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . On October 19, 2018, the band released a new single called Starlight . On the same day, Amuse published a message on the band's website that Mizuno had left the band for health reasons. She herself announced that she wanted to pursue a solo career in the near future as soon as she was healthy again. At this point she hadn't appeared in public for a year.

On October 30, 2018, Z2 Comics released Apocrypha: The Legend of Babymetal , a graphic novel drawn by GMB Chomichuk . It tells the story of the three girls from Babymetal who travel through different time periods to fight evil. The 2018 tour concluded in December, with performances in Singapore (with Judas Priest), Japan (with Sabaton ) and Australia.

Metal Galaxy (2019)

Management announced on April 1, 2019 on Twitter that the third studio album would be released later in the year; in addition, there was the announcement of the first part of a new world tour. On May 10th, the single Elevator Girl was released , but without an accompanying music video. On June 28th it was announced that the new album is called Metal Galaxy and will be released on October 11th (in Japan three days earlier). Also on June 28th, the day the tour started, the song Pa Pa Ya !! as a digital single. It is a cooperation between Babymetal and the Thai rapper F. Hero. The music video for this was shown from July 1st and was recorded just three days earlier at the start of the tour in the Yokohama Arena . In between, Babymetal performed at the famous Glastonbury Festival in Great Britain on June 30th, becoming the first Japanese group ever on one of the main stages.

Since the start of the tour, the group has again consisted of three front women, with Mizuno's position being occupied by three dancers until further notice, who alternate in rotation and do not take on any vocal parts. These are Riho Sayashi , who was a member of the girl group Morning Musume from 2011 to 2015 , Kano Fujiihira, a member of Sakura Gakuin since 2015, and Momoko Okazaki, a former member of Sakura Gakuin. Together they are called Avengers ("avengers").

Music genre

The management and the band define the style of Babymetal as a new genre called Kawaii Metal - derived from kawaii ( か わ い い ), which can be translated as "cute" or "adorable". They take the position that this is a fusion of different metal styles with the J-pop of the idol scene (aidoru) . In the music press, the band is most commonly associated with the genres of speed metal , death metal , black metal , industrial metal , EDM and J-pop. In some songs music styles are woven in that seem incompatible with metal, such as: B. Reggae or Hip-Hop . On their second album, the band experimented with folk metal , metalcore , progressive metal and ska .

Metal Obsession magazine wrote in its review of the debut album: "[Babymetal] made metal cute without losing its sharpness." The music is also suitable for people who actually don't like metal. The website MTV81 praised the “headbanging pure energy” and described the style as a mixture “of fundamentally different metal styles and idol pop, creating music that is anchored in both vocal band shrieks and cuddly choruses”. Metal Hammer said of Babymetal's recipe for success: “Short skirts, schoolgirl charm and squeaky voices - just like in the manga comics. But they mix it up with metal. Slams, breaks and solos are shot into a pot with squeaky techno melodies. Sounds strange, but that's how it is. "

The predominantly Japanese and occasionally English language lyrics deviate thematically considerably from those of typical metal bands and - in contrast to the accompanying music - are mostly much less aggressive. They deal with everyday problems, chocolate and chewing gum, the fear of weight gain, self-motivation, the fight against bullying, attending the first metal concert or the Japanese ideal of women .

Live performances

Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) is the lead singer of Babymetal. She has a clear, expressive soprano voice and is considered one of the best singers in the Japanese idol scene. Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) and - until they leave - Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) contributes either background vocals or screams . For some songs, only Nakamoto is on stage with the musicians and sings solo . Mizuno and Kikuchi sang some less technically demanding songs in a duet (i.e. without Nakamoto); they formed a subgroup called Black Babymetal .

At concerts, Babymetal is supported by an accompanying band . In the early days, these were the Babybones - a group of nameless individuals in full-body skeleton costumes who mimicked a live performance to backing tracks . In October 2012, a real live band was used for the first time, the members of which called themselves Gods of Metal ("Metal gods") and were soon generally known under the Japanese name derived from it, Kami Band . For about a year, the two formations alternated, since the beginning of 2014 only the Kami Band has performed .

A special feature of Babymetal's live performances are the synchronous dances that are presented parallel to the singing - typical in Japanese idol pop, but completely unusual in the metal genre. Each song has its own, sometimes very complex choreography , which is rehearsed down to the last detail and sometimes takes on theatrical features. Kikuchi and Mizuno (or a substitute dancer since 2018) bear the brunt of the dance, while Nakamoto takes the central position as lead singer and does a less strenuous dance. The dances are created by the choreographer Mikiko Mizuno , who in addition to Babymetal looks after the groups Elevenplay , Perfume and Sakura Gakuin . The stage costumes are inspired by the Gothic Lolita fashion scene that is popular in Japan . They usually consist of ruffled skirts in black and a shiny metallic top that is modeled on armor.

In place of the “ french fries fork ”, band members and fans use the fox ( kitsune ) as a hand sign. In the early days of Babymetal, the three girls were shown photos of the hand sign that is common in the metal scene . However, they mistakenly thought it was a fox's head and so created their own mark. On this basis, the management created a fictional legendary figure called Fox God (Kitsune-sama) , who gives the band "divine inspiration"; many fan articles also refer to it.

Kami tape

The Kami Band in Toronto (2015). Left to right: BOH, Fujioka, Aoyama and Ōmura

The backing of Babymetal in live performance is the Kami band ( Jap. 神バンド , Kami bando ) consisting of established session musicians composed. They usually appear with corpse paint and white robes. With the exception of the guitarists, who take turns, the line-up of the Kami Band is the same. Its current members are:

  • Takayoshi Ōmura: guitar (since 2013)
  • Leda Cygnus: guitar (since 2013)
  • Isao Fujita: guitar (since 2015)
  • BOH: Bass (since 2013)
  • Hideki Aoyama: drums (since 2013)

The guitarist Mikio Fujioka, also known as Ko-Gami ("little god"), also belonged to the Kami Band. He fell from the platform of an observatory on December 30, 2017 and died of serious injuries on January 5, 2018 at the age of 36.

Substitute dancers

Since Mizuno's departure, substitute dancers have taken their positions until further notice, but, unlike her, do not sing. In 2018, two or more dancers added to the choreography, although they were not officially introduced by management and fans could only find out their names through research. It was Minako Maruyama and Shōko Akiyama from the group Elevenplay, the actress Minami Tsukui and Saya Hirai and Kotono Ōmori.

For the 2019/20 world tour, they returned to the tried and tested three-person line-up, because this makes the choreography appear more harmonious. The third position (next to Nakamoto and Kikuchi) is shared by three dancers in a rotation principle, who are staged much more prominently as Avengers (" Avengers "). These are Riho Sayashi (former member of Morning Musume ) and Kano Fujihira and Momoko Okazaki (current and former member of Sakura Gakuin ).
