The standard version of the single released on June 19, 2013 in Japan contains the song Akatsuki as the B-side , while Onedari Daisakusen can be found on limited versions . All three songs are also included on the debut album Babymetal .

publication

After an advance notice on April 1, 2013, the single was released two and a half months later on June 19. It appeared in four versions: a standard edition and the three limited editions “Ki”, “Tsu” and “Ne” (Kitsune means “fox” in Japanese). The DVDs belonging to the limited editions contain live recordings of two songs from one performance each of the Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse concert series . Buyers also had the chance that the single was also accompanied by a ticket for a promo concert that took place on June 14th at Rockmaykan in Meguro .

A mini-tour consisting of three concerts called the Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution also served to promote Megitsune . The band performed on May 10, 2013 in Osaka at Big Cat and on May 17 and 18 in Tokyo at Zepp DiverCity . The visitors also received an exclusive single edition with a remix by Yuyoyuppe (under the name DJ'Tekina // Something ).

composition

Megitsune

Megitsune ( メ ギ ツ ネ ) combines speed metal , melodic metalcore and J-pop , with samples of traditional musical instruments giving the song a very Japanese character in places. Instead Metal typical screams scream Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) Anfeurungsrufe as sore or wasshoi , which are widely used at carnivals. The lead vocals by Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal) are modeled on the melodramatic style of Enka music. The bridge is stylistically varied; it contains a breakdown , dubstep elements and a sequence of notes from the well-known Japanese folk song Sakura Sakura .

The lyrics are about women staying strong by showing their acting skills and not showing off their facial expressions. He compares foxes or their mythologizing representation in the form of the kitsune with women who use makeup and thus wear a kind of mask. Nakamoto said that foxes are similar to women in that they can hide their true feelings, even in difficult times. Recording started shortly after Ijime, Dame, Zettai was finished . After several remixing sessions, Taiko drums were added while the lyrics remained unchanged.

More songs

The song Akatsuki ( 紅月 , dt. "Dawn"), sung exclusively by Nakamoto, belongs to the genre of Speed Metal , with a slow intro and a fast main part. It was first used as background music for the first live performance of Iine! to listen. Since the high grades were very challenging and Nakamoto sometimes missed them on the first appearances, she completed vocal training, which quickly improved the quality of the performance. The lyrics are about past love that cuts through the heart like a sword.

As a duo "Black Babymetal", Mizuno and Kikuchi sing the song Onedari Daisakusen ( お ね だ り 大作 戦 , German for "begging strategy") in rap metal style. For once, Nakamoto appears in the chorus as a background singer. The lyrics are about girls who flatter their father in order to scurril money from him.

reception

Megitsune received positive ratings from most of the critics. M-ON! Press highlighted the connection between tradition and modernity, compared Nakamoto's singing with that of Amy Lee ( Evanescence ) and named the line kitsune, kitsune, watashi-wa megitsune ("a fox, a fox, I am a vixen") in the bridge as stimulating. The Japan Times considered Megitsune to be one of the highlights of the Babymetal album , as it did without the typical " gimmicks ". In a Billboard interview about the album Metal Resistance , Nakamoto said that Megitsune is very popular with international fans and that karate will probably come close to that popularity. Kerrang! described Megitsune as "Babymetal's hottest song so far."

The Huffington Post was from Akatsuki done; the song is an opportunity for Nakamoto to “show off her strikingly powerful voice”. The Guardian described Onedari Daisakusen as "delightful with a wink"; it gives teenagers practical advice on how to get extra pocket money, but also describes the relationship between idol groups and their fans ( otaku ).

Music video

A teaser for the single - starring a yellow-crested cockatoo named Robin who appears to be headbanging to the song - was uploaded to Toy's Factory 's YouTube channel on May 31, 2013 . The actual music video was directed by Takuya Tada and appeared four days later on May 4th on Babymetal's official YouTube channel.

The video had been viewed over 56 million times by March 2019. The recordings were made in the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo , which is now a popular destination for Babymetal fans from outside of Japan. The three members of Babymetal can be seen in black and red costumes. They dance in a theater, accompanied by the "Kitsune Band", who seem to play traditional Japanese instruments ( Taiko and Shamisen ) in typical metal style . This expresses the contrast between tradition and modernity. At the end of the last chorus, Nakamoto pulls a Shikomizue short sword out of her microphone holder and says with a threatening expression on her face that women shouldn't be underestimated.
