Gimme Chocolate !! ( jap. ギ ミ チ ョ コ !! , Gimi Choco !! ) is a piece of music by the Japanese metal band Babymetal , which is included on their debut album of the same name . It was first played at a Babymetal concert in 2013, but was not released as a single in Japan . The music video uploaded to YouTube became a huge success, made the band internationally known and is generally considered to be genre-typical for their style known as Kawaii Metal .

The piece was first played on December 21, 2013 at a concert in the Makuhari Messe in Chiba , the day after the 16th birthday of lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal). The first release took place on February 26, 2014 as part of the debut album Babymetal , a single release in Japan was not made. The day before, on February 25th, the music video for Gimme Chocolate !! uploaded to YouTube . As of May 31, 2015, the track was available in the UK as a digital single on iTunes , one day before the album was re-released there.

composition

Composition and arrangement by Gimme Chocolate !! are mainly from Takeshi Ueda, the former bassist of The Mad Capsule Markets . The song begins with elements of Thrash Metal . During the verse scream Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) different onomatopoeia , prompting Nakamoto with a pop Dur - chorus begins. This pattern is repeated several times. The lyrics are about the efforts of young women to maintain their ideal weight only to succumb to the temptation of chocolate.

reception

From music critics, Gimme Chocolate !! generally benevolent reviews, in which there is also some confusion. USA Today called the song a "bizarre amalgamation of Death Metal, EDM rhythms and sugary J-Pop melodies". The song begins with a "loudspeaker-shredding guitar attack that quickly changes to machine-gun-like squeaky singing and a chorus that are just as addictive as chocolate-coated breakfast cereals and cartoons on Saturday mornings." Fuse declared Gimme Chocolate !! to one of the nine "most experimental girl group songs of all time" and remarked that it sounds completely shrill when you first listen to it, but then it becomes a catchy tune.

Music video

The music video , directed by Ryōsuke Machida, was shot during the song's first live presentation at Makuhari Messe. On February 3, 2014, it was initially published in an abridged version on YouTube . The uncut version followed on February 25th, one day before the debut album. The video went viral and made the band known internationally; In March 2019, it topped 100 million views on YouTube. In 2015 it also appeared in a Japanese commercial for Chromecast . It is also included in the limited DVD edition from Babymetal .

Live performances

Since the release of the debut album, Gimme Chocolate !! part of the band's repertoire and is regularly played at their concerts. There were also several special appearances in which the song was also played: On June 12, 2015 together with DragonForce at the Download Festival in Donington Park , on September 20, 2015 together with Skrillex at the EDM Festival Ultra Japan in Tokyo and on September 5 , 2015 . April 2016 in New York during the television show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert .
