Metal Galaxy (written: METAL GALAXY) is the third studio album by the Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal . It was released in Japan on October 8, 2019 and worldwide on October 11. After Yui Mizuno left around a year earlier, Babymetal still consists of the singers Suzuka Nakamoto and Moa Kikuchi .
Publication and promotion
On April 1, 2019, three years after the worldwide release of the album Metal Resistance , Babymetal announced a third album for the same year, along with several concerts in Japan over the summer. Previously, two singles had been released that would also be on the album: Distortion on May 8, 2018 and Starlight on October 19, 2018 (along with the announcement of Yui Mizuno's retirement ). The release of the third single Elevator Girl , initially only in digital form, took place on May 10, 2019 together with the announcement of a new world tour; the accompanying music video was added on August 16, 2019. On June 28th, 2019 the fourth single Pa Pa Ya !! and finally on September 27, 2019 digital the fifth single Shanti Shanti Shanti .
The first dates for the upcoming, then not yet named world tour were announced May 10, 2019. It runs from the beginning of September 2019 to April 2020 and runs through the USA , Japan , Europe , Hong Kong and Taiwan . This includes a headlining show at The Forum near Los Angeles on October 11th, which coincides with the worldwide release of the album. On June 28, 2019, the album title Metal Galaxy and the remaining tour dates were announced.
Metal Galaxy appears in several versions, depending on the region. A standard double album with 16 tracks (CD and LP format) and four different limited versions called The One (for fan club members), Japan Complete , Sun and Moon are available in Japan . Here the release happens three days earlier than in all other countries, on October 8th, 2019. Internationally, the album will be released on October 11th with 14 tracks on a CD or two LPs.
Compositions
The band described the main idea of the album as "an odyssey to a metal galaxy". Lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto said the album was "like a toy box with a different mix of songs in it." While the Babymetal and Metal Resistance albums had “cool sounds to go with the songs”, Metal Galaxy presented “a new kind of Kawaii Metal ”. It integrates the sound of different countries in which the band has toured since Metal Resistance , and reflects the "journey" in recent years. The album also expresses light and darkness, emotions and ambivalence. Just as the sun and moon change the appearance of this world with their daylight and moonlight, the music paints the metal galaxy in different colors with ever new sound variants.
Compared to the previous albums, the band expanded their collaboration with guest musicians. Sabaton lead singer Joakim Brodén controls gruff growls in Oh! Majinai at, F. Hero raps in Thai in Pa Pa Ya and Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy sings in Distortion . Guitar is played by Tak Matsumoto on Da Da Dance and Tim Henson and Scott LePage from Polyphia on Brand New Day .
