George Shiras III

George Shiras III (born January 1, 1859 in Allegheny , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  March 24, 1942 in Marquette , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1905 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Shiras III was the son of the federal judge of the same name, George Shiras Jr. (1832-1924). He attended the common schools and then the Phillips Academy in Andover ( Massachusetts ). In 1881 he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York State . After a subsequent law degree at Yale College and his 1883 admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Pittsburgh in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1889 and 1890 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; in 1890 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional election of 1902 , Shiras was elected as an independent Republican in the 29th  constituency of Pennsylvania to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Galusha A. Grow on March 4, 1903 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1904, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1905. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Shiras worked in biological research. He also made a name for himself as a photographer of landscapes and wildlife. In 1935 he published a two-volume album of his photographs. He died on March 24, 1942 in Marquette, where he was also buried.
