Rock im Revier is a music festival held in 2015 and 2016.

On June 3, 2014, the music festival was announced at a press conference by the operator of the Nürburgring racetrack after negotiations between Nürburgring Capricorn GmbH and the MLK concert agency about the future of Rock am Ring had failed.

The festival was presented by the new organizer under the name of Green Hell - Rock Festival at the Nürburgring and was later renamed Der Ring - Green Hell Rock . After moving to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen , another name change took place in Rock im Revier . Financial disagreements between DEAG and Nürburgring Capricorn GmbH were named as the reason for the relocation of the major event.

history

prehistory

On May 30, 2014 it became known that the contract between the new owner of the Nürburgring , Capricorn Nürburgring GmbH , and the concert agency Marek Lieberberg concert agency had been terminated. A new contract was rejected by the concert agency after the new owner of the racetrack demanded a higher share of the total profit.

In a report by the Rheinische Post dated May 31, 2014, it was stated that the contract had already been terminated in January 2014. Marek Lieberberg described the demands of Capricorn Nürburgring GmbH as "completely unrealistic and excessive", since in his opinion the Nürburgring is the most expensive event location in Germany and you would have to reach at least 70,000 visitors to make a profit.

"We must already have at least 70,000 viewers for the point of profitability to be reached."

- Marek Lieberberg in the Rheinische Post

According to Carsten Schumacher, the managing director of Capricorn Nürburgring GmbH, the contract was terminated due to EU legal requirements. A closer examination of the contract showed that the conditions were unfairly distributed. Lieberberg denied Schumacher's reason for terminating the contract in an interview with Spiegel Online . Accordingly, the EU requirements were not the actual reason for the termination. The operator terminated the contract and submitted a new offer with the demand for an increase of 25 percent, as well as a partnership on equal terms. An offer from the Marek Lieberberg concert agency to allow the festival to take place again at the Nürburgring next year, which would have meant the 30th anniversary of the music festival on the race track, was rejected by the owner of the Nürburgring.

As early as June 3, 2014, it was announced at a press conference that a five-year cooperation agreement had been concluded with DEAG Deutsche Entertainment AG . According to the Musikexpress , a large part of the festival concept should remain the same, only the musical orientation should be more towards rock music . Which festival the fans will choose in 2015 could not be determined from surveys at Rock am Ring 2014. It was often said that the selection of the bands would make the difference.

For the ongoing Rock Am Ring 2014 event, the advertising posters for the follow-up event Green Hell were displayed for every festival visitor. On June 12, 2014, a report by the German Metal Hammer , based on a report by Focus Online , said that the operators of the Nürburgring wanted to obtain an injunction on the continued use of the “Rock am Ring” brand. If this decision is accepted, there is a risk of going to court. Should the court decide in favor of the operators, they can decide whether the new music festival on the racetrack will continue to bear the name Rock am Ring.

In a first hearing, judge Ingrid Metzger from the Koblenz Regional Court provisionally ruled that the “Rock am Ring” brand belongs to both Marek Lieberberg and the Nürburgring, since, in her opinion, the music festival is a joint project between the two parties. The final judgment was made on June 30, 2014. It was judged that both the operator of the racetrack and Marek Lieberberg belonged to the name "Rock am Ring", since both parties had the name protected. Lieberberg's lawyer announced immediately after the verdict was announced that he wanted to examine the reasons for the decision. Since Lieberberg had appealed against the judgment, the Higher Regional Court in Koblenz dealt with the case. After hearing other witnesses who testified in favor of Lieberberg, the name of the festival “Rock am Ring” was given to the organizer. However, the court made it clear that Lieberberg is still prohibited from selling fan articles with the name of the festival, as the sales rights for merchandising articles are still held by the Nürburgring.

Problems with the organization, relocation and name change to Rock im Revier

In a report in the Rhein-Zeitung on June 4, 2014 it said that the complete festival program should be announced in September of the same year. It is now said that the festival line-up will be completed at the end of the year, as the operator expects a comparatively high-quality band program as at Rock am Ring. First of all, the first Green Hell Rock Festival should take place from June 5th to 7th, 2015 - at the same time as Rock am Ring . On September 30th, however, it was announced that the festival would be held in the last weekend of May, i.e. one week before Rock am Ring, in order to counteract price inflation, among other things. However, the festival was at times on the brink because there were often uncertainties about the sale of the racetrack to Capricorn.

For a long time it remained unclear where Rock am Ring would take place. Initially, the JHQ Rheindahlen in Mönchengladbach was the preferred location for hosting the festival. However, there were delays with the Federal Agency for Real Estate Matters regarding a rental or lease agreement, which was necessary for the organization of the music festival. Mendig in the Mayen-Koblenz district had been clearing up this problem for a long time, so Lieberberg preferred the Eifelort. The festival will be held at Mendig airfield .

As a result, both festivals take place within a radius of almost 30 kilometers, which means that the two concert promoters DEAG and Marek Lieberberg enter into a direct competition. This is due to the fact that both music festivals should appeal to the same clientele. However, the festival will now take place from May 29th to 31st, 2015, one week before Rock am Ring. On November 5th, 2014 the first headliners of the festival were announced with Metallica , Muse and Kiss . The day before, the organizers announced that they had renamed the festival Der Ring - Green Hell Rock . For the newly launched festivals at the Nürburgring, Munich and Vienna, around 40,000 tickets were sold on November 29th. DEAG announced these figures after WirtschaftsWoche reported the day before that sales were bad.

On March 27, 2015, WirtschaftsWoche reported again that the music festival was about to end before it was held for the first time. This time the reason is that the advance payments agreed between DEAG and Nürburgring Capricorn GmbH were only partially paid. It is also said that the operator of the racetrack asked for the termination of the five-year contract, which Schwenkow refused. The article considers postponing the festival. However, according to the report, he is already looking for alternatives should the festival not take place at the Nürburgring. Both parties want to reach an agreement by the first week of April. It is also said that by February 2015 only 7,500 tickets for the festival had been sold. A relocation of the festival from the racetrack to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen is also possible. On April 2, 2015 DEAG announced that the festival would move to Gelsenkirchen due to the disagreements between the two parties. The festival was also renamed Rock im Revier . The festival program is to be retained. On April 8, 2015, the organizer announced that, despite the music festival's move, there should be three stages: one stage is in the Veltins Arena, another in the Emscher-Lippe-Halle , and an open-air stage the grounds of FC Schalke 04 .

In 2016 the festival was to take place from May 26th to 28th on the grounds of the Gelsenkirchen trotting track . Iron Maiden was announced as the first headliner . In February 2016 it was announced that the festival will take place in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle .

The festival was canceled for 2017. At the end of February 2017, the organizers announced the final end of the music festival.
