Poets of the Fall is a Finnish alternative rock band from Helsinki founded in 2003 by Marko Saaresto and Olli Tukiainen . The members are Marko "Mark" Saaresto (vocals / guitar / songwriter), Olli "Ollie" Tukiainen (guitar) and Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen (keyboard / producer).
The band released the singles Late Goodbye and Lift before their debut album Signs of Life , which was released on January 19, 2005 in Finland . The album reached gold status after a little over four months and later also crossed the platinum mark. It went straight to number 1 on the Finnish Top 40 charts and stayed there for over a year.
The song Late Goodbye contributed significantly to the success of the band, as it was used both in the credits in the PC game Max Payne 2 and was featured as a recurring theme in the game. The second single lift was integrated into the 3DMark 05 computer benchmark program from Futuremark.
The band has already won various awards in its history, such as the Game Audio Network Guild ( GANG Awards ) Award 2004 in the category “Best Original Vocal Song - Pop” for Late Goodbye , “Best Finnish Newcomer” in YleX's “Best of 2004 "," Finland's Mr. Pop 2005 "for Mark in a Stara.fi vote," Newcomer of '05 "during the Musiikki & Media Event, two Emma Awards for" Best Newcomer of the Year "," Best Debut Album of the Year " and "Best Finnish Act" at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006 . On January 19, 2007, Poets of the Fall won the "Best Finnish Band Award" at the 2007 NRJ Radio Awards .
Band history
The beginnings (2003-2004)
The band was formed in 2003 when Mark and Ollie, who had known each other for a long time, started a new project. After a short time, Captain joined them. That brought three different worlds together that formed Poets of the Fall: a rock singer, jazz guitarist and the "Industrial Machine Trance Man". The group soon had enough material to release several albums, but only a select few songs were produced.
That same year, the Poets of the Fall attracted further attention when Sam Lake, a script writer for Remedy Entertainment , asked Mark if they would like to write a song for their new project, Max Payne 2. When the game was released in 2003, interest in the band skyrocketed around the world. Shortly thereafter, Late Goodbye won first place at the annual GANG Awards in San Jose, California. The awards ceremony was televised on MTV International and G4TV , but the Poets were unable to attend due to other dates.
Since then, Late Goodbye has sold over 2 million Max Payne 2 copies worldwide. On June 30, 2004, the song was finally released as a single, which includes several different variations of the title track and a bonus track called Everything Fades .
A little later, the Poets came in second behind the winner Björk in an elimination competition, the winner of which was the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .
On September 9, 2004, the Poets' second single, Lift , was released, which remained true to the previous band style. Like Late Goodbye , Lift received worldwide attention when it appeared in the 3DMark 05 benchmark program from Futuremark. Lift spread the software with over 11 million downloads around the world. The additional song The Beautiful Ones , which was featured on the Lift single, consolidated PotF's typical poetry style.
PotF were voted the best newcomer in Finland in 2004. Lift took second place in the “Best Song of the Year” category.
On December 18, 2004, the Poets released the single called Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day , which could be downloaded from their website for about three weeks. After the song was released, the number of visitors to the Poets' website increased twenty-fold.
“... Is all about hope. Hope, now, is a tricky thing. A real double edged sword. It is the sole power that keeps mankind on it's feet. Heads up and at it. Even in time of crisis. An invaluable force of nature. But as hope can be true ... it can also be false. We choose the way to go, but will the road set us free? I wrote the lyrics to 'Maybe tomorrow is a better day' in context with this duality. In other words, where there is hope there must be doubt. There is no one without the other. And so, devilishly, parts of the lyric can be experienced either as doubting or as giving true hope ... it is up to you to give it meaning. "
Worldwide attention (2005-date)
The first Poets album Signs of Life was in high demand and received more pre-orders than expected. When it was released on January 19, 2005, it was number 1 in the official Finnish album charts in the first week. It stayed in the charts for a total of 56 weeks. It got gold on May 24, 2005 and also achieved platinum status on April 26, 2006. Signs of Life was the most successful album in Finland in 2005. The album received the Emma Award (Finnish equivalent to the Grammy) in the category “Best Debut Album 2005” and the band itself received one for “Best Newcomer”.
On August 13, 2005, the second music video Lift was released for Finnish television. From that point on, Signs of Life was offered on iTunes in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark . It was pretty quiet for the band until January 19, 2006 when they won the NRJ Award. They were voted “Best Finnish Breakthrough” by voters.
On February 9, 2006, PotF announced a new single released on March 26th. Carnival of Rust included two versions of the title track (a radio edit and album edition) alongside an exclusive live recording of Don't Mess With Me , one of the songs on the Signs of Life album .
On March 12, 2006, the Poets published the dates of their “Carnival of Rust” tour. It was also announced that their drummer Tapio would leave the band to pursue his own career as a photographer. Jari took his place.
The single Carnival of Rust was released on March 26th . On March 30, 2006, the accompanying music video was released on The Voice and MTV Finland. Lift director Tuomas "Stobe" Harju also worked for the Poets on this project. The single was released on December 1, 2006 in Germany. The second album of the Poets, which is called like the advance single Carnival of Rust , was released late on April 12, 2006 (actual release date: April 5). The album contains eleven new songs, a renewed version of Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day and the music video of the theme song Carnival of Rust . At the time of his entry into the Finnish charts, the debut was still there. The Poets therefore had two albums in the charts for six weeks. Carnival of Rust achieved gold status within three weeks and was awarded platinum on December 11, 2006. Carnival of Rust was released on September 12, 2006 in Sweden, on April 20, 2007 in Germany and also in Australia, Russia and the Ukraine. On August 16, 2006 Sorry Go 'Round and on November 29, 2006 Locking Up the Sun was released in Finland as a single.
On June 28, 2007 it was announced that the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat had nominated the song Late Goodbye as "the most popular Finnish rock song ".
On March 17th, 2010 the fourth long player "Twilight Theater" was released, which was awarded gold in its first week in Finland. The first single is "Dreaming Wide Awake". The album also features the theme song "War" for the game " Alan Wake " by Remedy Entertainment. Under the name "Old Gods of Asgard" they released two more songs on the Alan Wake soundtrack, namely "Children of the Elder Gods" and "The Poet and The Muse". The sequel " Alan Wake's American Nightmare " was followed by another track called "Balance Slays the Demon". Without a release in any of their own albums, "Grinder's Blues" came out with the game "Rochard".
Remedy and "Old Gods of Asgard" stayed true to each other in the 2019 game " Control ". Here the song "Take Control" could be heard in the "Ashtray Labyrinth".
