The Airbourne takes place on this stretch of coast.

Airbourne , also known as "Eastbourne International Airshow", is the world's largest air show held on a coast. It takes place every year in mid-August in Eastbourne on the English Channel in East Sussex in Great Britain and lasts four days. The air show made the health resort - from which its name is derived - internationally known. Airbourne was born in 1993 from a long relationship with the Red Arrows team. Since then it has been held annually and meanwhile attracts more than half a million visitors.

Air show

The air show consists to a large extent of national and international military flight performances with airplanes, parachutes and helicopters. Probably the most famous pilots are the Red Arrows , the aerobatic team of the Royal Air Force . The Airbourne has a folk festival character and so, in addition to the flying skills that captivate the crowd for five hours a day, there is also plenty of entertainment on the ground. In 2008 over 80 presentations were offered, which included, among others, the Blue Eagles and the Red Arrows , international military jets, historic aircraft, helicopters and free-fall parachutists.

financing

The air show is a major financial investment for the City of Eastbourne. The Red Arrows alone , which fly 15 minutes twice, cost several million pounds sterling . Until 2008, the costs could be covered by income from sponsorship , accommodation for tourists, stalls, sales of the event programs and souvenirs, advertising, etc. In order to ensure its continued existence, the beach and the promenade were closed and the entrance fee was £ 5 (approx. € 6.40). However, this measure was not welcomed by the audience and so only 48,000 tickets could be sold, whereby the breakeven point would have been 76,000. The ticket sales made the show a commercial event with an additional cost of £ 100,000 for police services. Since then, the obligation to pay has been waived and the number of visitors has increased again. In 2014, the Red Arrows had four 30-minute screenings.
