Romeiko

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Romeiko is a red wine variety . It is an autochthonous variety of Greece and is widespread on many islands of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea , but especially in the region of Chania on Crete . It is the third most commonly grown red variety in Greece after the Mavroudi and Liatiko varieties . The name is derived from the traditional name "Romios" for the modern Greeks (literally "Romans" as a former state people of the Byzantine Empire, cf. also Arabic "Roumi" and Turkish "Rum"). The area under vines was around 2,200 hectares in the 1990s .

On Crete, this late-ripening and high-yielding variety is used to produce red , rosé and white wines . According to Jancis Robinson , old-style red wines that are very heavy are still produced in the Chania region in particular .

Synonyms: Mavroromeiko, Loïssima, Loussima, Mavro Kritis, Romeïco, Romeiko Mavro and Romaico.
