Liatiko

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The red wine variety Liatiko (Greek spelling: Λιάτικο) is mainly native to the island of Crete . The cultivation of the variety is recommended in the Heraklion and Lasithi regional counties . However, it is also approved in the other two regional districts of Chania and Rethymno as well as in the mainland region of Macedonia . After the Mawrud grape variety , Liatiko was considered the most popular red grape variety in Greece in the early 1990s. It is processed in the PDO (Protected Designations of Origin - former VQPRD or OPAP) - Wein Dafnes (or Daphnes ) and in Sitia . With the grape varieties Mandilaria and Kotsifali , the wine of the Liatiko grape is often blended . Very aromatic dry wines and naturally sweet wines are produced from Liatiko.

The origin of the historical Malvasia grape, which was vinified on Crete more than 4000 years ago, is clearer. The island is one of the oldest viticulture cultures in the world. One of the oldest wine presses in the world was discovered during excavations in Vathipetro near the village of Archanes and containers with the inscription "Vinum Creticum Excellens" were found in Rome and Pompei, which prove that Cretan wines were famous all over the world . The historical Malvasia wine also comes from the island of Crete. Its successor is a mostly dry white wine and a golden, sweet wine that is also made from this grape.

Real-root vines are available from the winemaker Econoumou in Sitia. It is sensational that recently, around 240 years old, real- root vines were discovered in the Dafnes wine region by the winemaker Douloufakis, which he had pepped up and cared for over the years. Both winemakers develop the Liatiko dry and naturally sweet.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly hairy with white wool and is slightly pink at its tip. The spotted green young leaves (anthocyanin spots) are only hairy like a cobweb.
  • The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stalk bay is lyre-shaped open (but sometimes also closed). The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth have a medium distance in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The rounded berries are also medium-sized and blue-black in color. The berries have a thin skin and are very juicy.

Maturity: The grape variety ripens only a few days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very early within the red grape varieties. In Crete it can usually be harvested at the beginning of July.
