Mandilaria

The red grape variety Mandilaria is the seventh most common red wine grape in Greece . It is recommended to grow them on the island of Evia , in the Attica region , on the Cyclades , the Dodecanese and Crete . But it is also grown in the Peloponnese in the regions of Elis and Messenia . The planted area under vines was around 1590 hectares at the end of the 1990s .

The late-ripening variety with its thick-skinned, hard and dark berries produces low-alcohol wines with little body and structure that can be developed from dry to sweet. Varietal red wines, there is therefore hardly in Crete it is often with the grape Kotsifali blended . It is used in the wines Retsina , Peza and Archanes as well as in Paros .

The Mandilaria grape variety is also known under the names Amorgiano, Amorghiano (in Rhodes), Dombrena Mavri, Doubrena Mavri, Doumpraina Mavri, Doympraina Mavre, Koundour, Kountoura or Kountoura Mavri, Koutoura, Mandelaria, Mandilari, Mantilari and Mantilaria.
