Kotsifali ( Greek Κοτσιφάλι ) is a red wine variety . It is the eighth most common red wine grape in Greece . Cultivation on the island of Crete is recommended . The planted area under vines was around 1150 hectares at the end of the 1990s . The early ripening variety with the thick-skinned, hard and deep purple grapes produces mild, alcohol-rich, spicy and low-acid wines , which are mainly used for blending with the tannin-rich variety Mandilaria . The wines are of good quality.
