The place is located about 18 km south of the center of Heraklion at an altitude of about 320 meters on a ridge in the eastern foothills of Psiloritis (2456 m) immediately east of the national road 97 .

Dafnes is dominated by agriculture; Table grapes and sultanas from the Sultana grape variety , wines , spirits , vegetables and olive oil are the main products. The place is known, however, since the 13th century mainly because of out of Liatiko - Vine very aromatic and naturally sweet made Dafnes red wine .

The central village square with its large eucalyptus trees is surrounded by cafes and kafenia . The well-known Dafnes Wine Festival is held here every year, usually on the first ten days of July. On the north side of the square is the small church of Agia Zoni Agios Nikolaos, built in 1685.
