Airbourne (founded under the name Airborne ) is an Australian hard rock - band from Warrnambool in Victoria , Australia .

Joel O'Keeffe at Rock am Ring 2017

Band history

At the age of eleven, Joel O'Keeffe began to imitate riffs on his guitar by well-known Australian artists such as AC / DC and Rose Tattoo . His brother, then 10 years old, began to play the drums, inspired by him. At first the two played unsuccessfully with changing bassists until they later met the guitarist David Roads. In 2004 bassist Justin Street joined them and completed the quartet. In 2002, two of the band's songs were released on a compilation, back then under the name Airborne.

Their first EP Ready to Rock was released in 2004. 1000 copies of this were sold after concerts and are no longer available in free trade. In spring 2005, the band moved to Melbourne . Towards the end of 2005 they got a record deal with Capitol Records and played together with Mötley Crüe , Motörhead and The Rolling Stones , and in the summer at some festivals in Europe. In 2008 they were at Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , Wacken Open Air , played as support for Die Toten Hosen on the Machmalauter tour and also had a few headlining concerts of their own, such as B. one in the sold out Colos-Saal in Aschaffenburg with the alternative band Blac Head Lion (at that time still Chucks ) as opening act. In the summer of 2011 Airbourne performed again at the Wacken Open Air and at the Woodstock stop in Poland.

Her first album, entitled Runnin 'Wild , was released on June 23, 2007 in Australia. On February 19, 2007, the record deal was canceled by Capitol Records, but the album was released by EMI in Australia. Today the band has a contract with Roadrunner Records for worldwide distribution. At the ARIA Awards 2007 the band was nominated in the categories Best Rock Album and Breakthrough Album of the Year for Runnin 'Wild . In the video clip for Runnin 'Wild , Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead plays a trucker. On March 5, 2010, the studio album No Guts. No glory. released. The first single No Way But the Hard Way was released on January 13, 2010. On May 29, 2010, the second single Blonde, Bad And Beautiful was released .

From summer 2011 to early 2012 Airbourne worked on their third studio album Black Dog Barking, for which they hired producer David Howes, who has already worked with bands such as Simple Plan and Nickelback , among others . It has been on the market since May 17, 2013. The first single Live It Up was released on March 25, 2013. The idea for the album title arose from the idea that as a rock band, to a certain extent, it was an obligation to cross borders, especially in terms of volume.

In 2016 the band released the fourth album Breakin 'Outta Hell. The compilation Diamond Cuts: The B-Sides followed in 2017 . The content of this album included the two previously unreleased songs Money and Heavy Weight Lover. In the same year the band announced the departure of the guitarist David Roads. He was replaced by Harri Harrison.

The new album Boneshaker was released on October 25, 2019. In 2020 the band will tour together with Iron Maiden on their "Legacy of the Beast" tour.

Well-known but still unreleased songs

  • "Get on ya bikes": This song was probably recorded during the recording of Runnin 'Wild in the studio, but not used for the album. However, the band played the song live from time to time during this time. In the documentary It's All for Rock 'n' Roll , published in 2017 and included in the Diamond Cuts bundle , excerpts from the song were used (e.g. at 24:15 minutes playing time). This at least proved that a studio recording of the song existed. However, the song has not yet been released in its entirety.
  • "You Don't Fool Me": A studio recording of the song appeared on the Internet in 2012. It may be a song that was used during the recording sessions for No Guts. No glory. was recorded and was intended for the Japanese special edition of the album. This special edition, planned as a double CD, was ultimately not realized for unknown reasons, although on the one hand a catalog number was already assigned and on the other hand it was already listed by a few Japanese internet retailers before the planned release date.
