Kvelertak (Norwegian for "stranglehold") is a Norwegian metal band from Stavanger , whose lyrics are almost exclusively in Norwegian. The band's style mixes hardcore punk with influences from rock 'n' roll and black metal .

history

Kvelertak live at Rock am Ring 2019

Soon after Kvelertak was founded in 2007, they gained a certain fame in Norway with their demo Westcoast Holocaust , were even played on the radio and earned the reputation of a good live band. Still without a record deal , they were even allowed to play at the Roskilde Festival in 2009 .

In June 2010 the debut album Kvelertak was released on the Indie Recordings label . Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou took over the production, the artwork was designed by Baroness front man John Baizley. After an extensive European tour in 2010 - with Converge and Kylesa among others - Kvelertak were confirmed for various European music festivals for the summer of 2011.

The second album Meir was released on March 22, 2013 . The artwork was again done by Baizley. Not only did they make it to number 1 on the Norwegian album charts, but they were also internationally successful. The album was awarded the Spellemann Prize in the Metal category.

The third album Nattesferd was released on May 13, 2016. On March 8, 2016, 1985, the first single of the album was released. The song Berserkr was released on April 12, 2016 . The album, produced by the band itself, was mixed by Nick Terry, who has worked for Turbonegro ( Sexual Harassment ) or The Libertines ( Up the bracket ) in the past . The album was recorded live at Amper Tone Studios in Oslo , Norway .

Kvelertak played the opening act at the European concerts of the WorldWired Tour 2017/18 of the American thrash metal band Metallica . On July 16, 2018, Erlend Hjelvik announced on Facebook that he is no longer a member of Kvelertak. He was succeeded by Ivar Nikolaisen.

In spring 2019 Kvelertak toured Europe with Mastodon and Mutoid Man .
