Gojira (formerly "Godzilla") is a French metal band . The band was formed in 1996 in the city of Bayonne .
The name comes from the Japanese original title of the 1950s film Godzilla ( Japaneseゴ ジ ラGojira ). Gojira's texts mostly have the earth and environment as their content and are spiritually shaped.
history
The band was formed in 1996 by singer and guitarist Joseph Duplantier , his brother Mario Duplantier who plays drums , guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean Michel Labadie. Under the name "Godzilla" they played some demos and then changed their name to "Gojira". In 2001, their debut album Terra Incognita ( Latin for unknown land ) was released under the underground label Gabriel Edition .
Once in 2003, their second album, The Link ( Engl . For the connection ) appeared, various concerts were recorded and as part of a DVD called The Link Alive published. These two publications brought them a record deal with the French label Listenable Records , which brought their third album From Mars to Sirius (English for From Mars to Sirius ) in Europe on the market. The good reviews from the international trade press paved the way for a contract with the US label Prosthetic Records , which re-released their album in North America in 2006 . In November of the same year Gojira took part in the US tour of the Finnish band Children of Bodom and thus played together with Amon Amarth and Sanctity . In spring 2007 the band played as the opening act for Lamb of God together with Trivium , Annihilator and Sanctity. At the end of the year, Gojira toured with Behemoth and Job for a Cowboy .
In early 2008, Joseph Duplantier joined the Brazilian band Cavalera Conspiracy and played bass on their first album, Inflikted . Gojira's fourth studio album, The Way of All Flesh (English for The Way of All Flesh ) was published on 10 October of 2008. The Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe was a guest musician. Singer Duplantier says about the current album:
“This album is also a 'requiem' for our planet. [...] We don't want to be negative or cynical about the fate of humanity, but the situation on Earth is growing critical, and the way humans behave is so catastrophic that we really need to express our exasperation about it. It's not fear, but anger. But we still believe that consciousness can make a difference and that we can change things as human beings. "

From autumn 2008 Gojira played together with Sonic Syndicate as the opening act for In Flames on their European and US tour. The first headlining tour in the band's history followed in spring 2009 .
In 2010 they first worked with the band Apocalyptica , whereupon the song Bring them to light was produced.
style
Gojira use a wide range of styles in their music, with Death Metal / Technical Death Metal , Thrash Metal , Progressive Metal and Groove Metal playing a particularly important role. They are therefore occasionally compared to bands like Meshuggah , Mastodon , Sepultura , Neurosis or Morbid Angel . Musical influences from Gojira can be found in various bands such as Death , Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Metallica , Tool and Neurosis.
The band plays a technically sophisticated, rhythmic metal style with precise drumming , unusual rhythms , choppy "start-stop riffs " and breakdowns . They are also known for using atmospheric elements and instrumentals in their music.
The music of Gojira is characterized by progressive, unusual song structures and is free of the structure “ verse - refrain - verse ” often used in popular music . The singing style moves within the framework of hardcore -typical shouts and death-metal-typical growling . Often growls and clear vocals are mixed together to create an aggressive, yet melodic effect.
The band members grew up in Bayonne , a city on the west coast of France . The picturesque landscape and rocky coast there prompted her to deal with nature and the earth, and thus has a great influence on the subject matter that Gojira express in her music. The band's lyrics deal with spirituality and aspects of environmental protection .
social commitment
Gojira cooperate with the environmental organization Sea Shepherd to protect endangered marine animals, especially dolphins, whales and sharks. At Gojira concerts, Sea Shepherd members operate merchandising stands, proceeds from an EP with guest contributions by well-known musicians such as B. Devin Townsend , Max Cavalera and Fredrik Thordendal joined the organization.
