Karl Richter (union official)

Karl Richter (born July 15, 1904 in Berlin ; † September 19, 2005 there ) was a German trade union official. He was a member of the SPD and the ver.di union for 85 years.

Life

After attending primary school, Karl Richter did an apprenticeship in the printing trade . At the age of 15 he joined the Workers' Youth (SAJ). In 1920 he became a member of the Association of German Book Printers after he and other book printer apprentices went on strike to enforce the demand that vocational school lessons be recognized as working time . As an active trade unionist, he survived the turmoil of the Weimar Republic and the defamation of the National Socialists . During the Second World War , Karl Richter was transferred to a construction battalion in the Soviet Union .

After the end of the war, Karl Richter and his wife were first district councilors, Karl Richter nine years deputy chairman and then twelve years state chairman of the IG Druck und Papier in Berlin. In 1971, after his retirement , he founded the senior citizens' working group " 60 plus " in the SPD .

His 101st birthday was celebrated on July 15, 2005 in the Willy Brandt House. This made him the oldest social democrat in Berlin .

His funeral service took place on October 28th in the Ernst-Reuter-Saal at the town hall of Berlin- Reinickendorf . He was then buried in the Tegel municipal cemetery .
