Mutoid Man is an American metal , punk and rock band from New York City that was formed in 2012.

history

The band was formed in Brooklyn in 2012 by guitarist and singer Stephen Brodsky and drummer Benjamin Koller. After bassist Nicholas Cageao joined the band, the EP Helium Head was released in 2013 via Magic Bullet Records . The following year, a record deal was signed with Sargent House Records , which resulted in the debut album Bleeder being released in June 2015 . The album was produced by Kurt Ballou . The second album followed in 2017 under the name War Moans . Then are Adam McGrath , Chelsea Wolfe and Ben Chisholm to hear as a guest musician.

style

According to Thom Jurek from Allmusic , the band plays metalcore , incorporating elements from hardcore punk , rock 'n' roll , math rock , progressive rock and neo- psychedelic rock . Simon Dümpelmann from Rock Hard found that Bleeder has both punk and mathcore roots as well as “ poppy stadium rock ambitions ”. He summed up the music with the words: “Fast rocking prog between Mastodon and Thrice , with rough edges, but still quite accessible”. In a later edition, Dümpelmann reviewed War Moans . Here, too, the band is technically gifted, the music is both poppy and explosive and they mix “punk appeal and metal aggression”. There are also approaches from the stadium rock again. They have now increasingly devoted themselves to classic heavy metal and melodic hardcore , and with progressive elements comparisons to The Mars Volta and Muse are obvious. Lothar Gerber from Metal Hammer described War Moans ' music as "Metal 'n' Roll ", which is full of "drive, potential and quality". Thomas Kerpen from Ox-Fanzine noticed the extreme speed and the short playing time of less than three minutes per song on Bleeder and summarized the music as a mixture of stoner , speed and thrash metal . Compared to a band like Torche , which mixes power pop and sludge , it lacks catchiness. All in all, the music is brutal, but also played a bit rushed. The instruments are played precisely, the vocals fluctuate between guttural and clear vocals. In order to really be considered progressive rock, Mutoid Man lacks a bit of bandwidth, despite the mixture of hardcore punk, metal and classic rock . Two years later, Joachim Hiller reviewed the second album. The first thing he noticed was Brodsky's singing, which he described as unmistakable. Also characteristic is his "strangely 'technoid' ', exact and sometimes playful, sometimes very straight guitar playing", which makes Mutoid Man a good cave-in replacement (a previous band in which he was active together with Koller). The drums are thundering and galloping. On the album, the band combined stylistic features from Black Sabbath as well as elements from stoner rock, hardcore punk, doom metal and thrash metal, and Hiller would not have been surprised if a guest contribution by Mike Patton had been there. Overall, the music is complex, varied, breathless, hectic and groovy .

Mutoid Man has been the house band of the metal late night show "Two Minutes to Late Night" since 2015 and toured Europe with Kvelertak and Mastodon in spring 2019.
