Torche is a sludge band from Miami founded in 2004 .

history

Torche was founded in 2004 by former Floor members Steve Brooks and Juan Montoya together with drummer Rick Smith, who had previously played in various grindcore groups, and bassist Jonathan Nunez. The band released their self-titled debut album on Robotic Empire the following year, followed by nationwide touring with The Sword , Mouth of the Architect , Jesu , Isis and Mogwai . In 2007 the band released the EP In Return designed by John Baizley ( Baroness ) . After the release of the second studio album Meanderthal in 2008, Juan Montoya announced his departure from the group due to artistic differences between him and the band. For the time being, the group stayed as a trio and toured with Harvey Milk and Coheed and Cambria in this constellation . Another EP was released in 2010 via Hydra Head under the title Songs of Singles . The following year Andrew Elstner joined the band as the second guitarist, with whom the third, critically acclaimed and published via Volcom Entertainment studio album Harmonicraft was recorded. In the years that followed, the band toured and released various singles and EPs. The fourth studio album Restarter followed in 2015 via Relapse Records .

style

The Internet portal Whiskey-Soda compares the group with Baroness, Red Fang and the Queens of the Stone Age . For the Metal Hammer Melanie Aschenbrenner locates the group between Mastodon , Fugazi and Baroness.

Meanwhile, the band's style is a continuation of the style mixture of pop , stoner rock and sludge established by Brooks with Floor . According to Arne Ebner, the melodies are “more poppy, the sound more differentiated and the songs a little faster” compared to the previous group. The sound would still be preserved. Guitar playing is described in music reviews as heavy and heavily distorted sludge riffing, which is contrasted with pop melodies. Drumming is referred to on stonerrock.eu as metallic threshing, while bass playing is described as monotonously distorted shredding. Meanwhile, Brooks' high vocals are atypical for comparable music groups.
