Kylesa is an American sludge band.

history
The band was founded in Savannah ( Georgia ) in late 2000 / early 2001 by guitarist and singer Philipp Cope, bassist Brian Duke and drummer Christian Depken, who had previously played in the crustcore band Damad . Depken was after a short time replaced by Brandon Baltzley, the first line-up was completed by singer and guitarist Laura Pleasants early 2001, one from North Carolina native Punkette . The name of the band is derived from "Kilesa Mara " which in Buddhism stands for the five demons of depravity. This was followed by the single "Point of Stillness / Judgment Day" and a split EP with Memento Mori . The recordings for the debut album were overshadowed by the death of founding member Brian Duke, who died of an epileptic seizure . With his successor Corey Barhorst, the recordings for the first album Kylesa could be finished, which was released in April 2002 on Prank Records . A live performance by Kylesa in 2003 was, according to John Baizley, the initial spark for the formation of the sludge band Baroness , which was supported in the following years in particular by Kylesa guitarist Phillip Cope.
After the group had released various singles and the EP No Ending 110 Degree Heat Index in 2004, a record deal with the independent label Prosthetic Records was signed in late 2004 / early 2005 . The US music magazine Spin listed Kylesa as one of the “Next Big Things” of 2005. In March 2005, the second album To Walk a Middle Course was released . Shortly thereafter, drummer Brandon Baltzley left the band for personal reasons. Kylesa implemented the idea that had existed since the group was founded to play with two drummers who were found in early 2006 with Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley. The third album Time Will Fuse Its Worth was recorded with this line-up. In 2008 Jeff Porter was replaced by Eric Hernandez (also a member of the bands Capsule and Shitstorm ), in March 2009 the fourth studio album Static Tensions was released . By then, Kylesa had sold around 75,000 albums in the United States alone. In early 2010, Kylesa was signed by the French independent label Season of Mist , and in autumn 2010 the fifth album Spiral Shadow was released. The sixth studio album Ultraviolet followed in spring 2013 .
At the end of April 2016, the band announced on their Facebook page that they were pausing and that no concerts or studio activities were planned until further notice.
style
The band combines classic heavy metal with influences from doom metal , stoner rock and punk rock . A hallmark is the use of three equal singers, in which screeching vocals alternate with clear singing and the voice of singer Laura Pleasants. The idea is borrowed from hip-hop . It is also unusual that the band works with two drummers who play at the same time and can be heard in parallel on the left and right stereo channels . Their music is less catchy than the publications of their friends Mastodon and more rooted in heavy metal than the genre colleagues of Baroness . The band itself names the music of Neurosis , Kyuss , the early Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath as main influences.
