Spiral shadow -

Spiral Shadow is the fifth studio album by the US sludge band Kylesa . As on the previous album, the group uses two drummers on this album.

Emergence

The album's titles were written by Phillip Cope, Laura Pleasant and Carl McGinley, and songwriting for the album began in January 2010 in Savannah . In the compositions, the band paid more attention to psychedelic sounds and melodies than on the previous albums. Laura Pleasant dedicated the theme song to her mother with cancer . The basic lyrical concept focuses on interpersonal distance and is intended to be a look back at the history of the band since its foundation in 2001. The recordings took place in June 2010 in the Jam Room in Columbia , South Carolina . The album cover was made by the artist Santos. The band wanted a very simple cover with op-art elements, the basic theme of which is a cycle. The cover shows the endless spiral of a tree trunk, this tree motif continues throughout the booklet . The op art elements were provided by illustrator Casey McKinley, who also produced a 3D version of the covers for the limited edition .

The album was released in late October at Season of Mist and made his debut in the first week at No. 14 of the German Newcomer - Charts . In the US, the album reached number 11 in the Top Heatseekers . Spiral Shadow was released on CD as well as in various LP formats. In addition to a limited edition with two 12 "EPs in a gatefold cover, a CD version with a bonus DVD containing a making of the album was released.

Reviews

Phil Freeman from Allmusic describes the album as the masterpiece of the band and particularly emphasizes the commitment of the two drummers. He describes Spiral Shadow as a great psychedelic hard rock album. Stephan Voigtländer from the online magazine powermetal.de praises the balance “between massive hardness, tough-psychotic eruptions and catchy melodiousness” and says that the album doesn't stop growing. Patrick Schmidt from Rock Hard sees the album as more relaxed and compressed compared to its predecessor Static Tensions . He emphasizes the fuzz guitar sound, which stands in "attractive contrast to the multi-faceted drumming experience of the two ... drummers" and calls the album "great". For Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer, there is currently no band that “manages the balancing act between extreme metal and seventies rock more effortlessly”. In November 2010 the magazine chose Spiral Shadow as “album of the month”.
