Essmann's commercial buildings, the remaining buildings on the left between the corner houses

The residential and commercial buildings Graf-Adolf-Strasse 11 and 15 in the Friedrichstadt district of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf were part of the so-called Essmann's commercial buildings . This complex was built from 1894 to 1895 under the direction of the Berlin architects Heinrich Kayser and Karl von Großheim with their Düsseldorf office manager Max Wöhler . It formed the edge of the block on the corner of Kleine Königsallee , Graf-Adolf-Strasse and Hüttenstrasse. The only remaining two parts of the entire complex were entered on May 3, 2010 in the city's list of monuments in the residential and residential buildings category.

Urban planning

The houses were built on the site of the old Düsseldorf terminal stations . The closure of the Bergisch-Märkischer Bahnhof and the Cologne-Mindener Bahnhof in 1891 led to a fundamental redesign of the surrounding area. This affected both the location of the station building at this point, as well as the area of the now no longer required track system along today's Graf-Adolf-Straße.

architecture

The facades showed stone architecture between plastered surfaces . The formerly uniform facade design is no longer as clearly recognizable as it was when it was built, only one of the two still bears the original decorative gable.

Both buildings have four full floors and an attic. While the ground floor and parts of the first floor above are used as business premises, the rooms above are reserved for residential use. The latter are accessed via stairways that are separate from the shops.

use

Since around 1910, the business premises at number 15 have been used by the Lütgenau toy store, which closed in June 2010. At the moment (as of January 2011) the shops in both buildings are empty.
