Fuzz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fuzz (Engl. Lint , fuzz ), also Fuzzbox called, is a material used in music production effects unit , mostly to change the sound of an electric guitar used. The result is a distorted sound with lots of overtones . A fuzz is a special form of distortion .

technology

From a technical point of view, in the simplest case a fuzz consists of two amplifier stages connected in series. In general, the amplifier stages are connected to the transistors in the emitter circuit realized. The second stage is overridden by the first , and the signal is deformed to an approximate square wave . In addition to the timbre, the volume contour of the input signal is also changed. The overdriven amplifier stage cannot follow the original dynamics of the struck and decaying guitar string ( dynamic compression ). The combination of distortion and compression makes the sound of the electric guitar present and assertive. Fuzz is widely used, especially in rock and pop music .

Fuzz sounds more “sawing” and more intense than an overdriven guitar amplifier with electron tubes .

Similar categories of effects are also assigned to fuzz , e.g. B. the genus of octavers , which combine fuzz with partial rectification of the signal.

A typical example of the distinctive sound of transistor distortion is the song " (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction " by the Rolling Stones . Fuzz effects were and are occasionally used to overdrive amplifiers that have already been driven into saturation. The first fuzz effect was the Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1, which was first offered in 1962 .

Fuzz is often understood to mean a style of music that was first played in the 1960s and can also be found in garage rock , surf music and early psychedelic rock .

Jimi Hendrix was a well-known user of fuzz effects.
