Lint or lint , also called Mutsel , are fibers that have become detached from the yarns of woven or knitted fabrics . In the case of wool fibers , this lint often felts on the surface of the fabric and forms "knots". The phenomenon of pilling is called pilling . The nodules are sometimes known regionally as "Miezel", "Möppchen" or "Wollmäuse".

Emergence

The mechanical and thermal stress on the garments in the washing machine and in the tumble dryer favors the loosening of fibers from the threads. The lint that is already on the surface or loosely in the fabric is also loosened during washing or caught by the air flow of the dryer. Therefore, in  addition to dust and hair, there is also a lot of lint in the fluff filter - especially in the tumble dryer. This also explains why fabrics become thinner with an increasing number of washes and dryings and can eventually tear. However, pilling is also caused by mechanical stress when the item of clothing is worn, for example through friction under the arms or in the crotch.

distance

If lint on clothing or upholstery fabrics spoils the appearance, it can be removed as follows:

prevention

The textile industry uses chemical agents such as silica to reduce the lint of fabrics and thus make them more durable. Such "anti-pilling treatments", which are also advertised as "lint-free", are only effective to a limited extent. In addition, there are design options in the yarn sector to reduce the tendency to pilling through targeted fiber selection and processing as well as twist changes.

Impact on the environment

According to a study, published in the journal "Environment Science and Technology", more than 1,900 microparticles rub washing machines - in diameter smaller than a millimeter - per wash of fleece fabrics made of polyester - and acrylic textile fibers from. They are not held back in sewage treatment plants. If these microparticles get into the sea via sewage, they form part of the plastic waste in the oceans . Such particles were found in the sediment of 18 beaches worldwide, not a single sample was free of them.
