Kvelertak ( Norwegian 'stranglehold') is the debut album by the Norwegian rock band Kvelertak of the same name . It was released on June 21, 2010 by Indie Recordings . On March 15, 2011, the North American edition came out with a few bonus tracks, including live versions from the band's BBC sessions.

Origin and style

The album was produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge . It was recorded in the spring of 2010 at GodCity Studios in Salem , Massachusetts . The cover illustration is by John Dyer Baizley from Baroness . Stylistically it was described as a “bastard from Wolfmother , Turbonegro , Satyricon and Gorillaz ” and summarized with the catchphrase “Necro'n'Roll”.

After performing at the Telenor Arena in Oslo on June 24, 2011, the band was awarded a gold record by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for more than 15,000 from the record company and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters , who headlined that evening albums sold in Norway. In addition, the band was awarded in the categories "Best Newcomer" and "Best Rock" at the 39th Spellemann Prizes. The band also received a Statoil scholarship in February 2011 for promising newcomers worth around $ 180,000.

reception

Volkmar Weber awarded nine out of ten points in Rock Hard magazine . He wrote that the album “rocks incredibly heavy, is varied and, above all, cool and beautifully dirty.” In spring 2017, the German magazine Visions included the album in their list of the 66 + 6 best metal albums of the third millennium.
