Musical career
2000–2003: Foundation in Hiroshima
In 2000, the girls Ayaka Nishiwaki (nickname: A ~ chan), Yuka Kashino (Kashiyuka) and Yūka Kawashima (Kawayuka) founded the Perfume group in Hiroshima . The three attended the same drama school together, the Actor's School Hiroshima ( ア ク タ ー ズ ス ク ー ル 広 島 ). Since the Kanji 香 ka 'scent' occurs in the first names of all three founding members, they decided to name the group Perfume, English for perfume, Japanese 香水 . However, Kawashima left the group and drama school. Since A ~ chan's mother was of the opinion that a duo is not as good as a trio, A ~ chan approached Ayano Ōmoto (Nocchi), who also attended drama school in Hiroshima and joined the group. The band name was retained afterwards.
Their first two limited singles, Omajinai Perori and Kareshi Boshūchū (both 2002), they sold exclusively in their hometown. At this time, the group met the choreographer Mikiko , who designed the group's dances from then on.
2003–2005: Bee Hive era in Tokyo
In 2003 the three girls graduated from drama school, which they have attended since 1999, and moved to Tokyo . There Perfume became a member of the indie label Bee-Hive . They also signed with the Amuse management agency . In Tokyo they also met capsule member and producer Yasutaka Nakata , who from now on produces perfumes and writes songs for the group. Between 2003 and 2004 the three singles Sweet Donuts , Monochrome Effect and Vitamin Drop were released and the group had three small live performances. Although none of the songs became a hit, Amuse, Inc. decided to debut Perfume across Japan.
From autumn 2004 to summer 2005 Perfume Akihabara made itself "home" at times. The band worked with voice actress and singer Haruko Momoi . She produced the song Akihabalove and sings in it herself. From time to time the group gave surprise street concerts in Akihabara and were seen as " Akiba-kei Idols" until the release of the album Game (2008) .
2005–2007: Record deal with Tokuma Japan Communications and national debut
On September 21, 2005, the single Linear Motor Girl was released under their new label Tokuma Japan Communications . In Japanese media and also by the group itself, this single is considered a debut. The following year, two more singles were released, Computer City and Electro World . At this point, the group received increasing attention, but none of the songs were a hit. On August 2, 2006, the first compilation album Perfume ~ Complete Best ~ was released .
2007: Polyrhythm
While almost all Bee-Hive members were canceled by Amuse, Inc., Perfume got the chance for another single release. In February 2007 Fan Service: Sweet ( フ ァ ン ・ サ ー ヴ ィ ス [sweet]) with the dance song Chocolate Disco was released . The single marks a turning point for the group. Although sales weren't astronomical at just over 9,000 units, Chocolate Disco caught the attention of pop rock singer Kaela Kimura . She played the song regularly on her radio show. Kimura's radio show eventually caught the group's attention for a television commercial. On July 1, 2007, the commercial for a recycling campaign for the television network NHK aired with Perfume's new song Polyrhythm . Due to the success, the group was invited to the Summer Sonic festival. The single reached 7th place on the Oricon charts with over 60,000 records sold and was later awarded the gold record. After appearing on numerous music shows such as Music Station and HEY! HEY! HEY! , their biggest concert to date, Countdown 2008 , took place on December 31, 2007 .
2008: first studio album, first tour and Budōkan
In February 2008 their new single Baby Cruising Love / Macaroni was released , with which they reached the top 3 of the single charts for the first time. From April onwards, the Perfume members hosted the TV show Happy! Together with the model Naoto Tokuzawa and the comedian Nishioka Sumiko . until September. Shortly after the first episode was broadcast, the group's first studio album, Game, was released and held number 1 on the charts for a week. The album sold over 450,000 copies and was awarded two times platinum. Shortly after the album was released, the group held their first tour, which was sold out.
On July 9th, Love the World was released, the group's first song to reach the top of the singles charts. About three months later, the DVD appeared for the group's tour and reached number 1 on the Oricon DVD chart, beating the releases of singers Koda Kumi and Namie Amuro . In November the group gave their first concert in the renowned Nippon Budōkan with the title Budoukaaaaaaaaaan !!!!!

That same month, the group performed at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in Macau , which was the group's first overseas appearance. There they were named Best Asian Pop Artist .
