Maximum the Hormone (マ キ シ マ ム ザ ホ ル モ ン, Makishimamu Za Horumon) is a Japanese nu metal / hardcore punk band from Hachiōji , Tokyo . The formation has consisted of the members Daisuke Tsuda, Futoshi Uehara, Nao Kawakita and Ryo Kawakita since 1999. With the exception of Futoshi who usually only backup - vocals singing, the remaining three members change in almost every song with the lead from -Vocals.

style

The group is known for their unconventional and experimental style of alternative metal music. In the course of their careers they have incorporated elements from metal , punk , hardcore , pop and ska into their sound. Stylistically, her music runs from dark and serious to ironic and humorous, often with drastic changes in tempo and mood over the course of a song. Her music videos often have an ironic aspect, like Rolling1000tOOn , which shows an underdog who has mutated into a tyrant, or Koi no Mega Lover , which shows a would-be womanizer whose attempts at pick-up are turned down by a pretty girl.

Band history

1998–2001: Foundation, line-up change and the meaning of their name

Maximum the Hormone was founded in 1998 by Daisuke Tsuda and Nao Kawakita and completed by Key and Sugi. After a few regional appearances, the band signed a contract with the Japanese rock label Sky Records . ASA Crew was the first album on this label and was the only full-length album with this lineup . At the time, Daisuke wrote his songs entirely in English, and Maximum the Hormone was written in Latin letters. That changed when Key and Sugi left the band in 1999.

Looking for new members, Nao thought of her younger brother Ryo, who has it in the junior high school was guitar playing and could sing very well. From then on, the two men shared most of the singing, Daisuke doing the screams and rap vocals and Ryo the melodic parts. Futoshi completed the quartet as bassist. After this big change, the band decided to root their lyrics and the band name in katakana (a syllable or moraine script of the Japanese language). In 2001 the band released the EP Ootori .

When asked in an interview about the meaning of the name, Ryo answered: “Take it as you like, whether as a kind of Japanese cuisine for cooking offal or that the maximum number of your hormones begins to boil! Usually when we are overseas people think we are some sort of sexual energy drink . "

"Hormones" (or horumon) is a type of yakiniku (Japanese barbecue ) in which many of the organs that are usually thrown away are cut into bite-sized pieces and then grilled.

2002–2005: Mimikajiru , Kusoban and Rock-impo Goroshi

In 2002 the band left Sky Records and signed with Mimikajiru Records . The band released a new single, Niku Cup , followed by an album called Mimikajiru .

After the first full-length album, the band turned even more to recording, releasing two singles and one album. The next album Kusoban (2004) contained a wide range of musical styles and combined heavier parts with poppy passages, which secured them the attention of the masses. After the release of Kusoban , the band signed with the major label VPA. After a few more singles, the band released another album, Rock-impo Goroshi . The release caused a cut in their fans as the band decided to sell more tickets for their concerts, play at festivals and eventually a DVD, Debu Vs. Debu , to publish. In addition, her song was ROLLING1000tOON the theme song of the anime - series Air Master .

2006–2008: Bu-ikikaesu and commercial success

The breakthrough of the band took place with the song in 2006 Koi no Mega Lover , the ninth place in the summer of 2006 Oricon - charts climbed. This was her first top ten hit in Japan . Three of her songs became part of anime series: What's up, People ?! and Zetsubō Billy as the title and credits melody of the series Death Note and Akagi as the credits of the eponymous series. After these successes, the band released their next album, Bu-ikikaesu . The album debuted at number five on the Oricon charts. It was the band's first album to hit chart sales. The album got gold in Japan.

2008–2010: Tsume Tsume Tsume and first and second break

In 2008 the band released their second live DVD Deco Vs. Deco and made their first overseas appearances, a brief tour of the United States and Canada in support of the Dropkick Murphys . A new single called Tsume Tsume Tsume / F containing these two tracks and Kill All the 349 was released at the start of the Tsume Tsume Tsume Tour in July 2008 and reached number two on the Oricon Singles Chart. The tour ran through October 16, 2008, with an additional tour finale on November 30. Song F is about the Dragon Ball character Freezer .

Maximum the Hormone played their first England concerts supporting Enter Shikari when it became known that Daisuke was going to have an operation for problems with his vocal cords. So that he could recover completely, the band took a break, which began in December and lasted a few months. After Daisuke was back up and running, they played a few shows in Japan with the support of Bring Me the Horizon and Blessed by a Broken Heart . At the MTV Video Music Awards Japan in 2009 they won the “Best Rock Video” award for Tsume Tsume Tsume .

Since Nao had a daughter in May 2010, MTH took a break until further notice and canceled all live performances.

Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman played an instrumental version of Tsume Tsume Tsume , which he switched to the song Louisiana Bob towards the end , on his 2009 tribute / cover album Tokyo Jukebox .

In early 2011, her single Greatest the Hits 2011 ~ 2011 was released , which includes three tracks. Furthermore they announced some live performances in Europe , which ran under the tour name Euro Tour 2011 ENON -the Movie- .

After a six-year break, which was only interrupted twice by the single decoupling Tsume Tsume Tsume / F and Greatest The Hits 2011 ~ 2011 , the band announced the release date for the comeback album on their homepage on June 6, 2013 known. The record has been on sale in Japanese stores since July 31, 2013 under the name Yoshu Fukushu . The current single is called ALIEN and alludes to the Japanese P2P client Winny . The video for the title is in the classic style of the band and again contains a lot of satire and innovation .

2018: VAP - music video and new EP

On September 18, 2018, Maximum The Hormone released a new music video on their official YouTube channel, entitled VAP . This is the band's first new release in five and a half years. As you can read on the band's official website, due to the cancellation of upcoming concerts, which the band had to cancel due to a severe herniated disc of their singer Daisuke Tsuda , the decision was made to release this single as a kind of compensation for the fans. In addition, the song announces the departure of their previous record company VAP and the new collaboration with the music label Warner . The song is sung in a mysterious language from "Planet Ryo" that only Ryo Kawakita understands. On November 25th, 2018 Maximum The Hormone released their new EP Korekara no Menkata Kotteri no Hanashi wo Shiyo , which contains 4 songs and an additional manga .
