Fukuyama ( Japanese 福山 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Hiroshima .
geography
Fukuyama is east of Hiroshima and west of Okayama on the Seto Inland Sea .
The municipality also includes the eastern half of the southwestern offshore Bingojima Islands , from which Tashima and Yokoshima are inhabited, the southeastern offshore islands of Tomonoura (main island Sensui-jima ) and the southeastern Hashirijima Islands 6 km away , of which Hashiri-jima is also is inhabited. In the west lies the former island of Momi-shima ( 茂 美 島 ; 34 ° 22 ′ 47 ″ N , 133 ° 19 ′ 48 ″ E ), which is now connected to the mainland.

The 1956 incorporated place Tomo-chō with the port and the sea region Tomonoura has been an important port since ancient times.
Fukuyama Township was named a county town ( shi ) on July 1, 1916 .

Holocaust Education Center
The Holocaust Education Center was founded in 1995 by Makoto Ōtsuka, a clergyman who met Anne Frank's father personally in 1971 . It is the only educational institution in Japan that has specialized in the subject of the persecution of Jews in Germany and Europe from 1933 to 1945 . In addition to a collection that tells the history of European Jews in the first half of the 20th century using objects from all over the world, it contains a section dedicated to Anne Frank . On International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2011, an offshoot of the chestnut tree that grew in front of Anne Frank's hiding place was planted in the center's garden.
