The attachment

In connection with the deposition of Fukushima Masanori ( 福島 正 則 ; 1561-1624) in 1619, Asano Nagaakira ( 浅 野 長 晟 ; 1586-1632) received the Hiroshima Castle and Mizuno Katsunari ( 水 野 勝 成 ; 1564-1651) the Fukushima Castle with one Income of 100,000 koku . Katsunari had been able to defeat Gotō Matabē ( 後 藤 又 兵衛 ; 1565-1615) during the siege of Osaka and therefore enjoyed great reputation. Katsunari's father Tadashige ( 忠 重 ) was a brother-in-law of Tokugawa Ieyasu , so that there was a close relationship with this family.

Since it was Katsunari's task to control the Tozama daimyo operating in central Japan , he immediately began building the castle and built a mighty complex with a five-story main tower, seven three-story and sixteen two-story watchtowers and ten gates in the form of the yagaura-mon ( 櫓 門 ). The material came in part from Fushimi Castle and Kambe Castle ( 神 辺 城 , Kambe-jō ), which had fallen to the Tokugawa.

The Mizuno remained lords of the castle for five generations until 1698 with the death of the only two-year-old Katsumine ( 勝 岑 ) the line went out. Then from 1700 the Ōgyū-Matsudaira with 100,000 koku were castle lords for a short time, until 1710 Abe Masakuni ( 阿 部 正邦 ; 1658–1715), coming from Utsunomiya , followed, also with an income of 100,000 koku. The Abes remained lords of the castle until 1868.

The castle uses a 28 m high hill from which one can see the Seto Inland Sea . The hill was surrounded by an inner and an outer moat. When the railway line was built along the inland sea in the Meiji period , the southern part of the inner ditch in Fukuyama was used for the track system and the station for the city was built there.

During the Pacific War , the center of Fukuyama was badly damaged and the castle buildings were also lost. In 1966 the castle tower and other towers were reconstructed.
