The Museum of History of Hiroshima Prefecture ( Japanese 広 島 県 立 歴 史 博物館 , Hiroshima kenritsu rekishi hakubutsukan) is located in Fukuyama ( Hiroshima Prefecture ) in Japan.

Reconstructed section in Kusado

The Hiroshima Prefecture History Museum, located in the city's cultural area at Fukuyama Castle , opened in 1989. A nationally known part of the exhibition relates to the extensive settlement in the Ashida River (芦 田 川), on which Fukuyama lies, which has been excavated over 30 years. The settlement existed from the Kamakura to the Muromachi period for about 300 years under the name Kusado sengen-chō (草 戸 千 軒 町). It was quite large , as the suffix sengen (1000 buildings) suggests, but it was lost in a flood in 1631 and was never rebuilt. The settlement was discovered during river construction work in the 1930s and systematically explored from 1960.

The museum is divided into the following rooms:

  • Exhibition room on the history of the area : Stone Age and Bronze Age tools and implements from the prefecture are shown here. Furthermore, ship models and modern devices, including the pottery of the bitter Bizen-yaki (備 前 焼) and the Himetani-yaki (姫 谷 焼) from near Fukuyama, decorative on a white background, are shown.

Another area deals with the Kusado sengen-chō settlement in two rooms:

  • Exhibition room for I Kusado : Here a row of houses has been reconstructed in its original size .
  • Exhibition room for II Kusado shows unearthed pots and utensils from the settlement.
