Okazaki ( Japanese 岡 崎 市 , - shi ) is a city on the Japanese main island of Honshū . It is located 30 kilometers southeast of Nagoya .
geography
The city's landscape is characterized by densely populated residential and industrial areas in the north, west and south; there is textile, synthetic fiber and food industries as well as a Mitsubishi car factory . In the northeast and east of the urban area, vast hills, forests and foothills stretch out. Okazaki has a high density of temples and shrines, most of which are related to the Tokugawa family and were founded during the Edo period (1603–1867).
history
During the Second World War , the city was bombed with napalm bombs on July 19, 1945 by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) . The attack destroyed around 32% of the urban area and, according to official information, left 322 dead and 32,068 injured. The firebombs burned 7,312 buildings in the city (see also air strikes on Japan ).
In 2006 the city merged with the neighboring district of Nukata . However, the Okazaki name still remains.
Attractions
Okazaki was an important castle town during the Edo period and a station on the Tōkaidō from Edo (Tōkyō) to Kyoto . In Okazaki Castle is also Tokugawa Ieyasu , the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate , was born.

- February: Fire festival to expel the Oni at Takisan Temple ( 滝 山寺 鬼 祭 り Takisan-ji oni matsuri )
- End of March / beginning of April: cherry blossom show in the castle park ( 岡 崎 公園 Okazaki-kōen )
- 1st Sunday in April: Ieyasu Festival ( 家 康 祭 り Ieyasu matsuri ), in honor of Tokugawa Ieyasu
- 1st weekend in August: Okazaki Summer Festival ( 岡 崎 観 光 夏 祭 り Okazaki kankō natsu matsuri ) (duration 3 days) and a large fireworks display ( 岡 崎 花火 大会 Okazaki hanabi taikai ) with up to 30,000 rockets and tens of thousands of visitors on the banks of the Otogawa River ( 乙 川 ) near the castle.
