history

Okazaki Castle is said to have been built in 1455 by the administrator of the province of Mikawa Saigō Tsugiyori ( 西 郷 稠 頼 ). In 1532, Matsudaira Kiyoyasu ( 松 平 清 康 ; 1511–1535) conquered the castle, rebuilt it at its current location and made it the seat of the family. His grandson Tokugawa Ieyasu was born in this castle.

Since the Matsudaira lost power after Kiyoyasu's death, Ieyasu had to be handed over as a hostage to Imagawa Yoshimoto, who lived in Sumpu . However, Ieyasu was able to return to Okazaki after the Battle of Okehazama . From then on he resided there for eleven years until he made Hamamatsu Castle his home.

After Ieyasu had received the Kantō provinces , the caretaker Toyotomi Hideyoshis , Tanaka Yoshimasa (1548-1609), who created the entire moat , resided there . After the Battle of Sekigahara , a branch of Honda moved into the castle, which then took on its final appearance.

Okazaki Castle is located on a hill on the north bank of the Sugō-gawa ( 菅 生 川 ) River , now called Oto-gawa ( 乙 川 ). At the highest point was the central area, the Hommaru ( 本 丸 ) with the castle tower flanked by two watchtowers (Ido-yagura ( 井 戸 櫓 ) and Tsuki-yagura ( 付 櫓 )). The second area, the Ni-no-maru ( 二 ノ 丸 ) , joined on the north side . Between the second area and the San-no-maru (三 ノ 丸) adjoining it in the northeast was the small Higashi-maru ( 東 丸 ). The Hommaru, including the three-story castle tower, was built by Honda Yasunori in 1617.

This complex was protected by numerous pre-fortifications, A: Hakusan-kuruwa ( 白山 曲 輪 ), B: Hieda-kuruwa ( 稗 田 曲 輪 ), Kita-kuruwa ( 北 曲 輪 ), C: Jōruri-kuruwa ( 浄 瑠 璃 曲 輪 ), D: Bizen. kuruwa ( 備 前 曲 輪 ) and the E: Suō-kuruwa (菅 生 曲 輪) located on the Suō River [F]. Other small fortifications immediately in front of the Hommaru were called Sakaya-kuruwa ( 坂 谷 曲 輪 ), Jibutsudō-kuruwa ( 持 仏 堂 曲 輪 ), Inkyo-kuruwa ( 隠 居 曲 輪 ) and Furotani-kuruwa ( 風 呂 谷 曲 輪 ). There were boat docks on the river. The main gate ( 大 手 門 , Ōte-mon ) was between the Bizen-kuruwa and the San-no-maru.

The lord's residence was in Ni-no-maru. Since Ieyasu was born there, the castle was called in the Edo period "The castle from which the holy prince comes" ( 神君 出生 城 , Shinkun shussei jō ).

After 1868 the castle buildings were dismantled and sold, and Hommaru, Ni-no-marau and San-no-maru became a public park. Stone walls and earth walls were only partially preserved, the trenches disappeared completely - except for the section south of the Hommaru. In 1959, the exterior of the castle tower, the Ido watchtower and the side tower were restored. The Tatsuki Shrine has been located next to it since the Meiji period . ( 龍城 神社 , Tatsuki-jinja ). The main gate (orte-mon) has also been rebuilt in recent years, but not in its original location.
