When Tokugawa Ieyasu brought the Tōtōmi province under his rule from Mikawa province in 1570 , he built a new castle to protect it using the old fortification Hikuma ( 引 馬 / 引 間 / 曳 馬 ) and changed the name to Hamamatsu. From this castle Ieyasu undertook numerous campaigns. When he was defeated by Takeda Shingen in the battle of Mikata-ga-hara in 1572 and had to flee, this castle was his salvation.

When Ieyasu received the Kantō provinces and had to give up his old provinces, one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's vassals , Horio Yoshiharu ( 堀 尾 吉 晴 ; 1552-1611) took over the castle. He expanded the castle to a considerable extent. In the Edo period, medium-sized and smaller daimyo resided there, many of whom were active as chancellors of Bakufu . Therefore, the castle was also called "into-the-world-into-castle" ( 出世 城 , Shusse-jō ).

The castle is known for the fact that the reforms of the Tempō period ( 天保 の 改革 , Tempō no kaikaku ) of the lord of the castle Mizuno Tadakuni ( 水 野 忠 邦 ; 1794-1851) were decreed from here, which then failed.

The attachment

The castle of the Edo period was created by extensive expansion of the old Hikuma castle to 500 m north-south and 450 m east-west. The castle tower was built on the highest point with 25 m above sea level by Horio Yoshiharu (1563-1611) in a separate walled area. However, the tower seems to have been lost at the beginning of the Edo period.

In addition to the castle areas Hommaru, Ni-ni-maru, San-maru and small areas, the castle also included quarters for the vassals, which had been created between the main gate ( 大 手 門 , Ōte-mon ) and the inner areas.

While the Hommaru is fortified by stone walls, earth walls and dry or water-bearing ditches were usually enough. The previous castle Hikuma-jō was integrated into the complex in the northeast as the "Old Castle" ( 古城 , Kojō ). Overall, the castle shows a transitional style, in addition to stone walls, earth walls, some of which are still protected by palisades.

After 1868 the castle was largely demolished and the trenches were filled in. The base of the castle tower, the walls of the castle tower square and the walls of the Hommaru have been preserved. On the unusually large base of the castle tower, a castle tower was built in 1958, which is based on the general construction of the time. Ieyasu is honored with a statue on the castle grounds.
