Kemijärvi [ ˈkɛmijærvi ] is a small town in the Finnish province of Lapland ( Finnish: Lapin lääni ). It is located about 86 kilometers northeast of Rovaniemi .
The city, on the lake of the same name Kemijärvi ( Finnish: järvi means "lake") and on the Kemijoki River, is the northernmost city in Finland. It extends over 3929.7 km², of which 427.56 km² are water. It has 7,370 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), of which about 60 percent live in the center of the village.
Kemijärvi is an important industrial (especially wood processing industry) and tourist center ( Pyhä ski area 50 km away) and is the starting point for hikes in the Northeast Lapland region. The most important tourist destination in the vicinity (municipality of Rovaniemi) is the 16-meter-high Auttiköngäs waterfall , which is located near a traditional logging place.

Kemijärvi has good traffic connections with the European route 63. In the vicinity are the commercial airports of Rovaniemi (85 km away) and Kuusamo (135 km away), which are mainly served by Finnair .
EFKM is the identifier of the sports airfield located near the city center.
The Laurila – Kandalakscha railway via Kemi and Rovaniemi leads to Kemijärvi. In the direction of Russia, the line is closed from here. There is a daily night train to Helsinki and back. The train carries modern sleeping cars. The station has a loading point for motorail trains .
economy
Lake Kemijärvi is used as a backwater basin for a hydropower plant operated by Kemijoki OY. The Stora Enso pulp- producing factory was closed in April 2008.
