The Auttiköngäs with water giant

The Auttiköngäs [ ˈɑu̯tːikœŋːæs ] is a 16 meter high waterfall in Finnish Lapland .

location

It is located near the place Autti 80 kilometers southeast of the city center of Rovaniemi in the river Auttijoki , a tributary of the Kemijoki . Due to its easily accessible location near the road from Rovaniemi to Posio , Auttiköngäs is a popular tourist destination.

history

When rafting emerged on Auttijoki at the end of the 19th century , a water giant and a dam were built on Auttiköngäs to regulate the flow of water in the Giant so that tree trunks could flow down the waterfall. Although rafting was given up in the 1970s, the giant is being maintained as a cultural and historical monument. In the vicinity of Auttiköngäs there are untouched virgin forests , which have been under nature protection since 1955.
